how can I clean my engine?

I got a 02 TA m6 with 35k miles, on it. I live in AZ and there is so much dirt, sand, dust in the engine compartement. how do you clean all the mess,
steam, engine cleaner product, spray wash water, etc....?
it goes off with my finger so I m thinking steam, would it mess up anything electrical , internal engine, etcc..

spray some wd40 on your electricals and that will not allow water to get into the electrical parts

I have always done it like ImportPatrol says. I WD-40 the connections after using a wand at a car wash. Werks Great.

50/50 mix of Simple Green and water on a warm engine compartment, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, hose off. Repeat if needed, use a brush for areas needeed a little elbow grease.
