Default Overheating

Well i need some help guys. Car was running fine temp wise. I put in a 160 degree thermostat and followed the directions as to putting the water back in. Now it gets up to 210 city or hyway and wont come down. Fans are comming on and shutting off and have never had any overheating issues. One question i do have is i just put water back in the system and no coolant. Does the ls1 motor have to have that coolant to run at a lower temp? I did the job at night and all the parts stores were closed so i just put water back in. I have checked the radiator and also the overflow tank on left and they are both full. Another question is, do you just fill the system completely up radiator and over flow tank or is there a certain measurement. The only thing i see that there might be a level on is that coolant cap with the plastic stick on the end of it but i didnt see any words or marks on it. Any help would be appreciated greatly, thanks. I dont have a tune or a programmer to set the fans to come on at a lower temp, but it seems to run hotter since i put the new stat in, thanks

You need to burp the baby, but you also want to
get a proper DexCool mixture to inhibit corrosion.

I believe all you need to do is let it idle with the radiator cap off. I haven't had any problems and that's what I did. As the motor runs you should see air bubbles rising to the radiator cap. That is the air releasing from the system. I'd get some Dexcool first though. Better for the cooling system.

Well i took the radiator cap off and started the motor and let it run till it got hot and i could see the fluid circulating in the radiator, how long do i need to let it idle for all the air to get out?

I say no longer than a couple minutes and you should be fine. It wouldn't be long after the thermostat opens and the system starts to circulate that the air bubbles will have worked their way up. On my bike, I shake the hoses a little bit while it's warming up to help loosen up some of the bubbles and I suppose it would help a little on the car too. Every little bit counts.

Default coolant

go to the 160 thermostat swap post. The absolute best way to burp the cooling system on LS-1. As far as the coolant, you definitely shoud run more of a 50/50 mix. If I were you, at this point. I would drain the radiator completely, then when you refill- use a 50/50 mix there. here is the link: http://www.installuniversity.com/ins...sity/index.htm
I hope that this help.

well i believe i got the system purged. I started it up and let it warm up and then killed it and pulled that small hose on the right side under the throttle body off and heard air escape quickly. I did this several times and i think its all out. Car seems to run real cool now. I dont have a tune or a tuner and so i havnt set the fans to come on at a lower temp. That is next on my list i reckon, thanks for the links and the help guys.
