i just installed hooker long tubes and O/R pipe on my 98 a4 ta 64k miles it took me 3 days and im exhausted. i just took it for a ride. the car sounds fine in park an neutral but when i pu it in gear it seems like it wants to stall and when i give it about a 1/4 throttle it backfires violently and surges bad....feels like power drop off dramatically. now the ses light came on a few moments after the install, but when i give it 1/4 throttle it starts to blink and then when i cruise with barely any load it stops blinking. when i did the install i took out all the plug wires and 2 plugs on the driver side. Is it possible that i didnt get a plug wire snug enough to cause this? or would it backfire in park and neutral also? My buddy that helped me swears its the timing way off cause i dont have o2 sims. All i did was plug the 1 o2 sensor from the old y-pipe and i bought a new one for the passanger side with nothing pluged into the rear ones. Could not having the rear o2 sims in be cause this drastic of a problem under such little load? help guys. before i got back out there tonight and start taking the plug wires off again i figured i'd get some imput from pros? thanks in advance
I bet its your o2 sims, lately all the guys with new LTs are having big problems with o2 sensors, and it could be a loose wire, ppl are saying the SES light flashes when there are loose wires, good luck man.
I think I can help you with a few of your problems. #1, not having the rear O2 sensors will give you an SES light (not a big deal). The blinking however may be telling you something else. An OBD scan would help. The car maybe surging trying to find it's idle since you've changed over to headers. Did you delete EGR and AIR? If you've fried yourself by working 3 straight days, take a break, and be patient. Plenty of info will come your way to help you out. BTW, timing shouldnt be a big issue by not having O2 sims.
they gave me a block off plate for the egr (i think thats what it is) but i left it out and i didnt block off the air. could this possibly be the problem? thank you for your info

I'd just about put money on a plug wire. Flashing SES is usually a plug wire, either bad or loose or not connected at all. An intermittent flashing SES can be a bad wire or bad connection. (I left #8 off when I installed my headers unknowingly - autotap told me all the misfires were on # 8 so I reached in and popped it on)
Not having O2 sims will cause an SES light to come on but won't affect performance.
Get your butt out there and make sure all the plug/coil connections are good.
Plus it's probably time for new O2s, but you can verify this to some extent with a scanner.

Well if you don't have them blocked off or the AIR/EGR hooked up to the flanges then that's a major problem!
i have the air tubes hooked to the flanges, but no block off plates, on either the EGR or the flanges. i checked all the plugs and wires just now and they all seem to be tight.

As long as your AIR & EGR is connected your OK. You don't need block off plates until you decide if you want to do away with AIR &/or EGR and possibly have the codes programmed out. I thought you meant you had the fittings on the headers open, LOL.
If you're sure all the plug wires are connected good and tight and still getting flashing SES my next step would be to get a scanner on it and try to find out which cyl. It could be you cracked a plug during/after your header install. I don't think you have a big problem, just need to track it down. Buying Autotap years ago has sure helped me out a bunch and I would recommend anyone buy some kind of real-time-data scanner. Good Luck! Let us know how it goes.

that seems like what it could be (cracked plug) cause the headers were resting on them during install and i hit them a few times pretty hard during the install....im gonna go take them all out right now. thank you very much for your help
i just checked all the plugs and the are fine and i connected them back up making sure they all clicked.....i took it for a ride and the back fire is gone but the car has no power i mean it feels like its cut in half. after getting on it from a stop the ses light started flashing again then a few moments later of driving itslow it stopped flashing. but again all the plugs and wires are in and fine.....any ideas? would it hurt me to drive it about 5 miles to autozone for a scan?
I had that problem. Check to make sure you dont have any major exhaust leaks where the collector and the ORY connect. I can also put money on a bad plug or wire..
well i went to autozone and got it scanned.....got code PO301,PO160,P0140. Now the PO301 said it was the #1 cylinder misfire, i change both the plug and wire and the car feels smoother (doesnt seem like its gonna stall) but there is still a misfire. When i drive the car wth just barely giving it gas it feels somewhat normal, when i give it a little bit more load it feels like power is dropping off, followed by a loud A$$ backfire. I took off the negative on the battery (to reset the computer, and clear codes) then brought it back to autozone to run it again on the scan tool. And again it said misfire on the #1 cylinder PO301. what the heck could be causing this? could i have somehow messed up the coil? Could the P0301 code mean any cylinder is missing? Or does it specifically mean the #1? thanks again guys
