Default Plugs supposed to glow at night?

Checked for arching on wires, etc. last night in the dark. Ever time a plug fires, it gets a blue glow on the porcelin part. Is this normal? Seems strange. I have Taylor wires, and they are about 5 yrs old. Just changed opti, and plugs. have a pretty bad miss situation going on.

I was afraid of that. It looked like it started at the boot and shot towards the head. But a blue glow though. Oh well, good excuse to order a set of over the valve cover wires from elite spark plugs.

It just pisses me off that I just put in a new trans, converter, electric water pump, opti, and plugs, start it up, and it all runs like ****!

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully the plugs are still ok after driving it a couple of miles with it missin. They were brand new Autolites.

did you use dielectric grease on the ceramic of the plugs when you installed them? should keep it from arcing.

No, didn't use grease on them at all. Would that really be a problem? Everything was fine before I changed the plugs and opti.

Every single one of them arch's at the boot. I'm just going to get a set of over the valve cover wires from elite sparkplugs and call it a day hopefully. The old Taylors are a few yrs old. I bet the boots are bad on them.

Before you put those new ones on, definitely get a packet of dielectric grease from your local parts store (should be a dollar or so). It is made for just that purpose, to help seal the plug wires to the plugs and keep them from arcing. Also helps keep the boots from welding themselves to the plugs (a plus if you're running headers).

I'm not sure that it'd fix the problem with the current wires. It might be worth the effort and money ($2) to try it before swapping wires, but thats your call, not mine.

I'll give it a try. it would be pretty easy to do on the drivers side.

i would definately try the dielectric grease first, especially if all the wires are arching.

i have heard of a bad coil causing problems like that too. not sure how it causes it but when the coil was replaced the arching stopped.

Well maybe those metal cover things on the stock wires were good for something after all. I have 5 year old Taylor wires too, thinking I'll go back to the stock type + covers.
