Question Oil Change Light Came On

I just had my oil changed in my 2001 WS6 2 weeks ago, my dad who has been a mechanic for 30+ years did it and I was there with him and I can assure it was done correctly.

Just now on my way home from lunch I gunned it from a 10mph roll and I saw my Oil Change light and some other light above it come on for like 2 seconds then went off and didn't come back on the rest of the way home. That kind of concerns me...what could that mean? I know I don't have any leaks, we checked after we changed it and I checked again just now, no leaks under the hood or under the car.

Maybe oil pressure drops when you WOT it. A gasket might be wearing down.

Did you reset the change oil light? I believe you turn the key to the "on" position and then press and hold the trip **** for a few seconds and that should reset, I think.

2 things here: first, the oil light flickering at WOT or any hard acceleration indicates a shift of the oil in the pan away from the pickup tube, causing a momentary "low oil" indication; your "change oil soon" indicator would light up when the computer calculates a change of oil, based on driving habits and miles since the computer's mileage was reset. It's usually around 3000-4000 miles. To reset your Change Oil indicator, turn the ignition to run, hold down the trip reset button for 10-12 seconds, and then turn off the ignition. That's only if the indicator is constantly lit.

Ya I saw it happen again today, and it comes on when I start the car and goes off shortly after I start driving. I'll just reset it in the morning and see how it goes. I checked my preassure while driving and it never dropped so it's probably nothing. Thanks guys.

That was probably your "low trac" light. I wouldn't worry about that one. By the way, if you turn off your traction control, the car accelerates much better. Every time that circuit detects a slip, it cuts the engine a little and it takes a split second to allow the engine to go... Without traction control, you can power right through that nonsense....

If you want to reset the Change oil light but don't want to reset the trip odometer here's an "undocumented feature": turn ignition key on but do not crank. Press gas pedal to floor 3 times. Turn off key. Oil change light will be reset.

How many miles is the change oil light set for? and can the change oil light mileage be set to a different mileage setting? as my change oil light comes on every 7000 miles since i purchased my car from new in 99.

Supposedly how often it comes on depends on several variables in GM's "magic" equation. I think driving habits play into it some...like the more often you run your car at a higher rpm is going to make GM's little clock count down quicker. I know I usually get somewhere in the 6k-7k range on the WS6. The Firehawk seems to stay pretty close to 6k.

I did the hold the trip button in for 12 seconds thing and that worked, but ya I didn't really want to reset my tripometer because I was keeping track of how long it was since I changed the oil so wish I would have read about the pedal thing first. Oh well. Thanks guys.
