Default Color of your oil?

? For some of you, when you change the oil in your car, does it come out "nearly" as clear as when you put it in? If so, how many miles are you going before changing it?
I ask because I changed mine and it was black, like all the other times I've changed it on my TA, my wifes Sunfire and on my intrepid. I've heard people get it to come out nearly the way it went in but am I missing something?

Maybe they change it every 500 miles. Mines always dark but never black because I have to add so much between changes.

if you're concerned about how your oil comes out, there are companies that can do analysis on your used oil to tell you exactly what it picks up.

How much does it cost?

I've heard if you change the oil a few times at 1500 miles ( or until it's not black ) then you can start running it 3k+ miles without it becoming black.

I love the people that spend the extra money on fully synthetic oil, but don't use it as long as they can. Every 2K miles? come on, every fully synthetic oil made today can go well past 5K miles.

I change mine every 6 months, I don't even get to 3k in that amount of time. And it's very clean when I change it.

On my last interval I went 8000 miles and the oil came out darker than new, but nowhere near being completely black. Analysis showed there was no fuel in it, very little dirt, and not all that much in the way of wear metals, so this is the reason why the oil came out still clean. I plan on doing longer intervals in the future. (eventually my plan is to change the oil only twice per year, or roughly every 10,000 miles)

What filter do you run that keeps it so clean?

Oh and how would one go about "fixing" things to make it not so dark?

You might have to change the oil, fire it up, drain the oil, and then put some new oil in it. Have you thought about a oil cooler? I have a Earls Temp-A-Cure, www.holley.com and click on Earls. If you do get one get a thermostat, or it will take like 20min for the oil to hit 160-170 degrees

Change my German Castrol every 5K or twice a year regardless of mileage. Twice per year should be a minimum as it's the only way to remove moisture unless you have a bypass filter set-up.

Can't say I blame those whom change every 2K while using synthetic. It's better to error on the side of caution & it's never a bad thing, just costs more.
