Cooling problems

1994 Z28. Its all stock except for a CAI, TB by-pass and airfoil. Automatic.

Lately I have been having a problem with it cooling. I bought the car used and it has a new radiator in it. If I drive a long distance on the highway at 70mph the temperature gauge stays around 180. Stays there alll the time actually so my heater isnt that great. Brand new 180* thermostat and a new 18lbs radiator cap. I am fixing to just go ahead and put a new water pump on this thing. Fans work when the PCM tells them to cut on. My gauge is also correct. Anyone have and input on this? I also have the airdam thing underneath.

So whats the problem? If the gauge is at 180 all the time that is good, thats where it should be.

That's actually pretty cool. If the car is running over 225, that's when you might have a cooling problem. 180' should make your car run nice at the track.

Well when i get off the interstate it will overheat for some odd reason.

It will just rise and rise and rise. I shut it off right before the red.

170-180 is avereage opertating temp while driving, rises and drops can be expected during stop/go traffic. sounds like the fans don't run. how did you verify the fans?

did you bleed the system before you drove it after you changed the thermostat that might be your problem.

If your car is getting hot when your at a light, or not going fast, it's most likely your fan. When you turn your air conditioning on, does the fan kick on? Have you checked under the hood to make sure it's running? To me, that sounds like the problem since it stays cool while your driving at higher speeds...
