Default New Gears, should I change the oil after 500miles?

My shop "recommends" chaning the rear diff oil after the break in period of 500 miles. But since I'm a cheapskate, I'm wondering if this is really necessary. How much would it cost anyway? Thanks.

On your own ramps, a $5 gasket and maybe $10
worth of gear oil. On somebody's lift, could be as
much as the market will bear. If you have a cover
with a drain plug forget the gasket. Filling may be
a pain without a pump of some sort (I use a "suction
gun", like once a decade).

I don't know about the 500-miles bit but having
seen what came out of mine at about 15K I'm all
for frequent service intervals. GM recommends
like 12K but nobody ever does it (even the dealer
where I had the scheduled service plan).
