Default Newbie here, and I've got a question.

Anyway I finially ended up getting a SS Camaro last weekend and I'm really happy with it. But now to the question. It's time for an oil change and I asked a friend of mine what type of oil to use and he said 5w-30 synthetic. He also said the synthetic is the way to go because of the aluminum block. Well the guy who I bought the car from said just the opposite. Anyway I bought Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic and valviline 5w-30, so I've got those two to choose from. Thanks

Joel

I use Mobil 1 5w30. You will hear a lot about Oil & what weight to use, but all seem to agree on Synthetic.

Synthetic, not because of the aluminium block (it has nothing to do with it) but because it provides the best and longest protection through the greatest range of temps.

Personally I use Mobile 1 10w-30 because it's hot almost all year here. 5w-30 is fine, manual says it's good especially if the temps get down kinda low in your area. A lot of people even use 0w-30 Castrol Syntec (German made).

I use the Mobil One synthetic, you'll find fans of each of the different kinds of synthetic, Mobil One, German Castrol, Amsoil, Royal Purple. I use the M1 simply because that's what's available in my area
If you want to know more about oil than you ever wanted to, go to bobstheoilguy (you'll have to google it I don't recall the url), and be ready to read ALOT

SEARCH. Lots of threads on this.

Long story short, use synthetic. Mobil 1 is good, german castrol and amsoil are as well. For filters use Mobil 1, K&N, Amsoil (if they make one for our cars...), I forget what the other reccomended ones are....

I run Amsoil 5W40, and the longer K&N filter HP2006. So far the Amsoil is doing great the motor is much quieter on this stuf than the GC 0W30, and RP 5W30 I have tried.

What he said. If you cant find the German Castrol, id go with M1 5W40. It is labeled as Truck and SUV, but dont worry about that. This was recommended to me by the oil genious of LS1 tech(Patman) and a few others. The only place i know where you can find it is Wal-mart. If you cant get either of those, look for M1 0W40.
