Default Rear Diff Serviced, and now it howls!

I just had the rear diff rebuilt, then I drove 500 miles and had the dealer to a rear end oil change. Ever since, it's been howling at a high pitch between 60-75mph under light load.

Did the dealer forget to add the little bottle of special limited slip lubricant? they charged me for it, but you never know if they actually put it in.

Thanks.

Look at the service invoice for what parts were used.

Torsens don't need limited slip lube additive. Light
level cruise would not expose the slip characteristics
of a clutch-type chunk. This I think is gear whine.

It may be that a thinner gear oil was used and simply
exposed the setup whine. Thicker will be quieter.

Hopefully the guy didn't put the cover on, go on a
smoke break, and forget the bit about filling with new
oil....

Either they didn't put oil back in or used wrong oil like manual trans oil ( they look like the same bottle).

FWIW I put in Amsoils equivalent 75W-90 gear oil in my rear and it wines a little now at 60-70. I'm going to put the GM gear oil back in to see if that will clear it up.

That happened to mine when the dealer replaced the pinion seal. Turns out they over-torqued the nut and the pinion bearings went out. Made the same sound you're talking about. Another dealer did it right the second time.

Get it looked at soon if its the same problem the rear could lock up.
