Default Emergency!!!! Please Help!

Can you weld on the oil pan with it still in the car? I thought it would be ok, but then someone said the car would blow up.

Here's the deal. I was supposed to make an 800 mile, 12 hour drive from college back to my home two hours ago. My family is flying out tomorrow and I was supposed to be there. I decided to change the fluids before I left and as I'm letting the car down from having it jacked up, the jack catchs on a rock, stopping it from rolling back, and the cradle slips off my k-member. I now have a hole two inches in diameter in my oil pan and I NEED to get the hell home. None of the dealships in town stock an oil pan, and even if they did it would take a solid day to change it.

I basically need to cover the hole with a plate and have it welded on, but someone told me the car would blow up (I'm assuming from the oil catching on fire). Is this true?

I am sorry to hear that. Its going to be a PITA as well to get the cracked oil pan off and the new one on. Buts it got to be done. Personally I would not even think about driving my car; especially with a quick fix.

I hate to say it, but I would JB weld a piece of sheet aluminum on there just to get you home. It'll work but I would replace ASAP.

800 miles drive as well. I would never chance it. Especially driving 12 hours...

Considering the price of a LS shortblock I wouldn't risk it. Take a bus it'll be cheaper.

Definitely do not attempt to try this while the pan is on the car. As everyone else has said, you might be able to get away with a patch, but one little leak will kill the motor quick. Jump a flight, train or bus and consider the money you save on gas to be the money you have to spend on the bus. Probably want to order a pan soon though so you can get it changed when you get back.

Welding a sealed enclosure like an oil pan on a motor is not a good idea. especially on a motor cause the gasses in the oil could catch fire. luike these guys said get a rent a car or somethin.
