Emergency!!!! Please Help!
Can you weld on the oil pan with it still in the car? I thought it would be ok, but then someone said the car would blow up.
Here's the deal. I was supposed to make an 800 mile, 12 hour drive from college back to my home two hours ago. My family is flying out tomorrow and I was supposed to be there. I decided to change the fluids before I left and as I'm letting the car down from having it jacked up, the jack catchs on a rock, stopping it from rolling back, and the cradle slips off my k-member. I now have a hole two inches in diameter in my oil pan and I NEED to get the hell home. None of the dealships in town stock an oil pan, and even if they did it would take a solid day to change it.
I basically need to cover the hole with a plate and have it welded on, but someone told me the car would blow up (I'm assuming from the oil catching on fire). Is this true?

I am sorry to hear that. Its going to be a PITA as well to get the cracked oil pan off and the new one on. Buts it got to be done. Personally I would not even think about driving my car; especially with a quick fix.

Definitely do not attempt to try this while the pan is on the car. As everyone else has said, you might be able to get away with a patch, but one little leak will kill the motor quick. Jump a flight, train or bus and consider the money you save on gas to be the money you have to spend on the bus. Probably want to order a pan soon though so you can get it changed when you get back.
