Default Oil Usage!?!?

i am new to the forum and new to the ls1's, but that doesnt mean i dont know my stuff about autos. about a month ago i purchased my convertable ls1 A4 with 85,000 miles on it and right off the bat replaced the tranny mount. BUT! just the other day i drove it to work (4:30 A.M. 30 degrees ) and the low oil light came on and i checked it and sure enough there wasnt even enough oil to wet the dipstick on the dern thing. on cold start up if i rev to 2,000 it sounds real poppy on down wind like the rings arent set until it gets to operating temp and they expand therefore using oil on cold start up. Anyone got anything they would like to say to this, i only put 2500 miles on the car and they day i bought it the oil was full...................

This may not be related to your problem but some LS1's use quite a bit of oil through the the PCV system. My oil junky used about 1 quart every 2000 miles until I replaced the valve with a truck pcv. As for that sound I wouldn't have a clue. Maybe some else will chime in and help. Welcome to the site. You'll find that the people are really nice and very helpful. I think you'll really like it.

EDIT: oops, I forgot my wife was logged in. My user name is dajodsterman, just for the record.

Just thought of something. It is common for people that normally take short trips to experience oil loss on longer road trips. This happens because of moisture building up in the oil on short trips. The car dosen't run at operating temp. long enough to burn off the moisture. On a longer trip the moisture is burnt off and you see a drop in the oil level because the moisture is gone. If the car was driven on short trips before you got the car, then when you got the car your trips where long enough to get rid of the moisture in the oil, that could cause your oil level to drop. Combine this with the LS1's oil usage and that might be the answer to such a big drop in your oil level.

I'm not able to test this well, but end of oct put in 0w30 castrol german syntec, put on more than 1000 miles and noticed no real oil loss since I put it in. Oil pressure is significantly higher compared to the mobil 1 it had before.

On cold startup, there is a bit of "backfire" coming from the exhaust, sounds like extra popping, its nothing major and will clear itself up after a few minutes. If that's what you have, I wouldn't worry about it.

My rate of consumption with mobil 1 was about <1 quart every 1500 miles, so I don't consider my car an oil junkie.
