Ticking Or Tapping Noise Coming from Engine
Hi I recently purchased a 1999 Pontiac Trans Am about 2 months ago and a couple of weeks ago I began to hear Slight ticking or tapping noises coming from my motor when I start the engine its not a knock or piston slap it sounds like its coming from the top end of the motor it use to tick or tap as long as the car would sit and idle on start ups now the ticking or tapping sound has begun to get louder and it does'nt stop even if I drive it around my car has just turned to 64,000 miles and has good oil pressure does anyone know what my problem could be or has anyone else ever had this issue before any and all help would be greatly apprieciated. Thanks In Advance.

I would take the car to a reputable mechanic in your area. I have serval drag race buddies that work at dealerships. But here goes. SOund like you have a lifter that is stuck or a racker arm that has worked itself lose and out of adjustment. Cound be weak valve springs also if it does this constant. Try flushing the motor with seafoam and then change the oil. If the motor have any sludge it might be keeping oil from a lifter or rocker. This is just my opinion from not hearing the car run myself. Good luck

I had this same problem with my silverado and it was lifters where leaking down over night. I installed some LS6 valve springs and the ticking noise went away, but I think what fixed the problem was torqure the rocker arm bolts down to 20 ft-lbs.

Check to see if the pushrods are bent, then try looking at the springs/rocker arms as well. Also check out the lifters.
Now if you have headers, look for leaks from your A.I.R. tube flanges, or the EGR flanges, or even worse header gaskets.
If thats not the case look for header leaks.
Good luck hunting it down. When you find the problem, post up in here and let us know what it was.
Peace,
Craig.

But have you checked the oil level lately? And what type of oil is in there?
What octane rating gas are you putting in your car?
Only 93 I hope.

Craig.

My 99m6 had an annoying ticking sound coming from under the hood too!! What I found was a loose sparkplug that was backing out. Check all your plugs make sure they are snug! Least expensive and simple thing to check. Hope this info helps you out. Goodluck!
