coolent smell

i have a 01 silverado with the 5.3 and every so often i will get a coolent smell for a couple of days then for a little bit i won't smell any thing i know i'm loosing water but can't find out where it is going it isn't going into my oil and i can't see any wet spots on the engine or truck. any body have any idea

Hearter core could be leaking! Ya can have a pressure test run on the cooling system and see if it starts to leak some where!

a friends waterpump was leaking on his 5.3 silverado and it never hit the ground to leave puddles. I finally notice trickles coming down the front of the bluck when I took off the skip plate to look

most likely it is the heater core...do you smell it when you put on the heat?

I have heard that coolant will show up under a black light. You can get one at any kind of a party store and then just use that. Make sure it is dark wherever you decide to check for it.

i've felt the floor for the heater core but it was dry and have looked at the front of the block thinking it would be my waterpump but that was not it and u can smell it out side of the truck

probably a water pump, very common. check the passenger side floor board for antifreeze as well. my bet is a water pump. actually alot of people don't know this but the gaskets are what leak not the pump. if the truck has a few miles i would get a new pump, but otherwise just replace the gaskets!!
