Default T-tops Ticking/Tapping

Both of my t-tops are making a ticking noise when going over bumps. The passenger side one is really bad, I can even hear it over the radio when it's not up high. I thought it might be the pins that latch them to the car, so I put some electrical tape on them and it helped a little until the tape fell off. I thought I read something on here a while back about a fix for this. It had something to do with caps on the metal pins. Does anybody have this problem or know how to fix it?

No they aren't, but that is what the noise sounds like. I though I remember someone on here in the past saying that was the problem.

Are there plastic sleeves in the part where the pins go into the car?

The pins should slide into the plastic sleeves on the T top bracket attachted to the car. The sleeves are sized so that there is so give.

I'll have to check. I think so, but I don't remember those ever being plastic. They do move around to allow the pins to fit in without perfect alignment.

Here:

I have these plastic inserts in mine. They keep my T tops from moving around.

Maybe yours are enlarged or missing?

No, mine are there, I checked. Despite that they still make a clicking/ticking noise when going over bumps. I even adjusted the tops by moving the brackets on the car so they fit tighter and still no luck. The only thing that helps is electrical tape over the pins. It's very strange and very annoying.

Well if your plastic inserts are still good...

The only thing I could even think of is to keep coating them with tape or try spraying a rubberized undercoating on the pins? It might just come off though since the pins are chrome.

I am stuck on this one!

I had a similiar problem with the pins rattling on bumpy roads. I lossened the plastic cover on the t-top and stuffed foam inserts inside the t-top housing then tightend it all back up. The rattling didnt completely go away but its definitely a 90% improvement.

So you are saying that the rattling was in the linkages under the t top cover? I have mine apart right now. It is a pretty simple mechanism. Maybe it makes noise as the linkages wear out.

I've taken those covers off and tried silicone and other stuff. What do you mean by foam inserts? If it helps I want to give it a try. I know for sure that my linkages do have some play in them at the hinge which may be part of the problem.

Where are you from? The colder it gets the more mine rattle. Same was w/ my C4 and the targa. Part of the problem is that when the weather stripping gets cold, its less plyable, meaning its not as expanded and doesn't cushion the movement... At least thats my guess...

Cleveland, so yeah it's cold. I have the weatherstripping noise and I'm used to that. This noise believe it or not is much louder, like a tapping sound whenever I go over larger bumps. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the mechanism that locks/unlocks the tops.

I use regular foam like the kind that you would find as seat cushion or foam padding. I cut it into long strips and stuffed them inside the covers and tightend everything back up. The foam really helped with the rattling cuased by vibrations on bumpy roads. On the highway its 100% gone and on bumpy roads its 90-95% gone. Its worth a try. If I knew how to post pics I would post a pic of what I am talking about.

I forgot to mention that most of the rattling on my T-Tops was coming from the linkage! The foam inserts help keep the linkage from bouncing around thus little or no noise.

I think I know whay you're talking about. It's not the pins that go into the roof of the car that's making the noise, it's the joint on the inside of the t-top. I noticed they are only riveted together and the rivets did seem a bit loose. So the foam keeps them from moving around and making that noise...it's worth a try. I wish there was a way to replace the rivet with something else that is tighter.

Hey, guys and girls. I just forwarded Crager some pics of what I did to fix the noise coming from the t-tops.Hopefully he will be able to post them soon. I have been taking more notice of any rattling or noise coming from my t-tops since this thread started and I can definitely say that its 100% gone. The foam did fix my problem. Hope it helps yours.

How many pics did you send? I have two from you.

Here they are, and thanks BTW man!!!

Here is a pic of the t-top assembly its hard to see the foam inserts from this pic but it shows the screw that I loosened to get the foam inserts in.

Here's a pic of the foam inside the t-top assembly. You can see it through the missing key lock. Thanks , I hope this helps.

Peace,
Craig.
