Question Temp ?

What is the normal temperature that my SS(2000) should be running at? I'm curious what ya guys temp runs at. My gauge always shows between 200 & 210. Is this normal or do I need to replace anything?

Nothing wrong with it, 99-02 gauges are on a single circuit. The only year with a correct working water temp hand is the 98 cars, its dual circuit. Our's will read 210 degrees when temp is between something like 205-230. Yeah, not worth a ****. It will be well worth it buying a water temp gauge for the 99-02 cars.

It reads 210 for the actual temperature range of 180-226 degrees.

At least thats my understanding.

Yea. It'll always show 210. I'm getting an Autometer temp. gauge to see where mine is actually running.

As said above, for an '00 car don't even pay much attention to that gage. You need a scanner to see the real running temps, or just do an aftermarket gage.

Ok, this has been the best explanation of the dummy gauge so far. My only remaining question now is, when it's warming up, is the gauge just simulating warm up or what?

Also, i don't really want to add aftermarket gauges in my car, is there any way to make the dash gauge work properly?

I installed aftermarket gauges and they pretty much mirror each other untill the true gauge stops approx. 180 while the dash temp goes to 210.

The dash gauge operates from a serial relay from the onboard computer. Its designed to act not unlike an idiot light.
I don't know a way to "fix" it, only to add an aftermarket temp probe into the head above the # 8 spark plug .

Yeah, buy a '98. LOL.....

I've heard of a couple people trying to make the '99+ gage work, not sure if they were ever sucessful, I think most people just go the aftermarket route because it's less hassle.

There's a plug above the starter that you can use as well for the sending unit. Or so I was told. But you suppsedly loose alot more coolant by doing it that way. I'm still waiting for my dang gauge to arrive.

Interesting, thanks for the info, guys! Only thing i've got to wonder about is, "why?" What did GM gain by ghetto riggin' the temp gage like that. I can only think money, but c'mon... how much could they have saved by doing that? lol.

I've read that it's because people would bring the cars in a lot for overheating problems that they 'thought' were occuring because the temp would climb so much when idling through heavy traffic. So they used a system that did not have any flucuation in the ~175-230*F range. Seems odd though, usually people that buy cars like these would fully understand why the needle is moving and rather have it that way, but I guess GM was trying to avoid warranty claims on non-exisitant problems.....
