engine knock question

i started my 98 z28 and heard a loud pop from the engine. shut it off, started it back up, it runs but with a loud KERCHUNK KERCHUNK KERCHUNK. just wondering what it could be. i know it could be alot of things, just trying to narrow it down.

A spun rod bearing can sound like an engine knock. That can happen from running low oil.

oil was good, not sure what caused it, only had the car about a month, kept oil in it and it ran really nice.

if you only had it for a month, id suspect who ever sold it to ya screwed you over. Prolly louded it w/ 20-w50

Did you notice the oil came out thicker then usual? If they added that Lucas Oil stabilizer stuff it really quites everything down and fills up any bearing clearance gaps.

sounds like you need to just take it to a mechanic and have him take a look

i dont think i explained the problem right. when i said it runs, i mean i turned it on and it started up, but in NO way would i ever drive it or even let it run like that. i just wanted to explain that it did turn over. it was in neutral, so i understand it could be flywheel or something external to the engine. but yes, i will have a mechanic look at it.
