or find a parking lot at school that drops off at the edge, drive your car so the front tires are just at the top of the drop off(put on the parking brake and chock the wheels) and you should be able to reach the drain plug and filter. that may be ghetto too but it would be safer than the factory death-jack and you wouldnt have to buy anything.

WHy not just put 2 pieces of cull lumber (i think I used 2x4) leading from the ground to the ramps. My car is dropped and it worked for me.

I always use rhino ramps for an oil change and my
tuner who is a professional uses them too.

just a thought...use a curb...i do it all the time. its easy. 100% safe since i doubt the concrete is going to discinigrate (sp?)

Frankly, I just use the "Curb". I drive one side of the car up on the Curb so the car is @ a slight angle, then Move a Hydro Jack underneath to lift just a little bit, slide under, remove oil pan bolt, get out, lower jack...oil comes out. If you have a high enough Curb, you Prob. don't need a Hydro jack.

But to answer your Initial Question, No, Do not rely on the Spare tire Jack !!! It is not designed to lift the whole car. Even 1/4 the weight makes me wonder how something so small is able to lift such a big car. It's really only for Emergencys. Like changing your spare on the side of the Freeway. If you can Call a tow truck, and Are willing to wait 45min-2hrs, then so be it.

I would not do it that way. Way too dangerous. Get Rhino ramps @ Wal mart for $25. or have Wal mart change the oil for you. They actually change oil with Synthetic for about the same as it costs me to do it.

walmart will never touch my car

if I was desperate I'd take it to my GM dealer to be changed and bring in my own oil and filter

I'm going to buy a pair of jack stands tomorrow though

Your life isn't worth changing your oil, or a limb for that matter. Jack stands are a must, or take it to a place and hover over them like a Hawk. I'm always up my mechanics' ***, they let me do my own oil changes with their lift now. =)

Theres a sticker on the jack that says not to get under the car while it is supported by the jack.

Another +1 for rhino ramps. I get a bit of scraping even with those, so I put down a 2x6 board in front of them to get the car high enough for the ramps.

I would never do it. we were changing a tire on my dad's chrysler LHS and the factory jack collapsed, car fell right on the rotor. i should have taken pics of the jack. the metal just bent like it couldn't support the wieght. spare tire jacks are made pretty shitty.

i've broken two spare tire jacks. Both times the weight of the car shifted a little, and they just bent right in half. Twisted the threaded rod. I'm careful while using it to change a tire, i will avoid putting my hands under anything that will take them off if the car falls.

either use rhino ramps or get some peices of 2x8 and stack them like steps and drive your car up on them. your college doesn't have a lift? alot of colleges have one. become good friends with the maininance guy who runs the shop and change your oil while standing under your car.

I third the wood. If you already have the ramps, but they don't work, go to a lumber store and buy some wood to put in front of the ramps.

Quick Reply: is this a safe way to change the oil?
