Do a search for "Patman" and read the oil tests that he has conducted. M1 5W-30 is actually closer to a 20 weight oil at temperature and the LS1 likes a thicker oil. I'm no expert but have done a lot of reading and have reviewed the oil tests conducted and for that reason I myself stay away from M1 5W-30. I can also tell you that my LS1 used to burn or use about 1 qt every 2k miles when I ran M1 5W-30. Since switching to the GC i no longer burn or lose any oil.

Please notice that i said "I stay away from M1 5W-30" this is my personal preference based on oil tests and lots of reading. I never said M1 was a bad oil or that no one should use it. I used to use M1 5W-30 oil in all my cars since I first started driving back in 1983 but once I saw the tests I stopped using it in my LS1.

No, the lower number is the weight of the oil when cold. You want an oil that is as close to 30 weight as possible when the engine is at temp. The GC 0W-30 is one, Royal Purple Racing 41 (NOT their 5W-30), Amsol 5W-30 and Redline 5W-30 are some of the better oils for an LS1. I think the M1 truck and SUV had some good numbers as well.

If Patman see's this thread I'm sure he will throw his .02 in. He is the LS1tech oil god. I'm just a humble student

yes, it is a good all around oil. If you don't like the hefty price on the K&N why don't you try a WIX or Napa Gold (the are the same thing).....those will save you a few bucks.

From the test data I have seen the GC 0W-30 is the ideal oil for the LS1 whether used in winter or summer. The 0W rating means this oil will flow freeer in the cold weather than a 5W oil so it is safe to use in winter down to like -20 or something like that I believe.

You might want to read http://www.bobistheoilguy.com Lots of good information on oil there.

And if you really want to find out the condition of the oil you use in your own car you can have an oil analysis done for 20 bucks. You can get an oil kit at http://www.blackstone-labs.com/. I honestly have not done this yet but plan to at my next oil change interval which may be 2 years from now based on the yearly mileage of my LS1

also ive been seeing a thing on tv called Engine Restore, has anyone used this?? its suppose to clean up the cylinder walls that might have scratches and wear, helps with gas mileage and frees up horsepower that is being robbed by the wear on the walls.

Is it safe to run 0w30, it seems a little thin.

yeah i didnt think it would make much of a difference using it once, how do you use it??? i think im gonna go with 5w-30 but i might change my mind when i go to buy the ****. 10w-30 seems alittle better to me considering it doesnt get in the single digits around here that much, plus summers are brutal and i want to see if it helps my pressure after the car gets all warmed up.

You only want the 0W-30 and it MUST say "Made in Germany" on the back. if it is any other weight or does not have the made in germany on the botttle it is not the stuff we are suggesting.

As far as the Engine Restore stuff goes I would stay away from it. I used it once years ago and it gunked up the engine pretty badly. I'm not a fan of any oil additives but that's just my opinion again.

i dont see how German Castrol 0w-30 is thick, i mean does it not thin out or something?? thats what i heard it doesnt thin out on you and its really good lubrication for the engine. also how many miles until you have to change synthetic or does it say on the bottle.
