k&n filter Hey everyone....I just pulled my filter and on the side where the air hits most direct is completely black. Now I just cleaned this not to long ago and it wasn't that bad. Is this a sign of how my car is running, cuzz it has been running like ****. Just curious....thanks
More likely that the K&N has spooged all over your
MAF sense elements and drifted its calibration. Not
that the SLP MAF is any kind of accurate to begin
with, the so-called "'98-'00" part is jacked lean and
any K&N butter is only going to make it worse. Clean
the MAF, ditch the K&N for a paper one (or, take care
with the filter cleaning hygeine and clean the MAF
every time you change the goo).

if you clean the k and n filter properly you will not get any on the maf, you have to let it sit out and dry properly also
First...spray the cleaner on the filter...let it sit..then spray FROM THE INSIDE ONLY water thru the filter..next make sure its dry... then Only apply enough to make your filter barely pink..not red..make sure its dry
Then its ok to use your filter

Man i'm glad for the responses on this one. Thanks eveyone, everybody pretty much nailed it on the head. I'm one of the ones who over oils it and thats probably my car issues. Now what is the best way to clean my maf....just wipe it off???? Thanks guys

I've heard on the forum here that spraying electrical contact cleaner on the sensor wires is the way to go. I might try that someday. I have K&Ns for the truck and the Camaro and have always taken care not to over-oil.
One way I've come across to help the filter element dry faster is to lay it on a cotton towel. The water will wick out and really help to dry it fast. Then I set it up on its side and put a fan on it.
