Default overheat

My cars temp is usually around the 1/4 mark hardly ever above... tonight it went waaaaay over almost to to the top so i just shut her down.

Coolant level is fine, fans seem to be working fine so im guessing it might be the thermostat or water pump... any idea how i can check either without opening up the car?

thx

whats the HIGHEST temp you should let your car reach before switching it off to avoid damage to the engine? 260?

Sounds like your thermostat is stuck open, as for the temperature I would shut it off as soon as you see go over 210.

210 degrees is a normal eng temp operating range! I would go past 225 thats when bad stuff starts happening, sounds like a thermostat is stuck(broken). I would say waterpump but only if your overheating standing still at a light or stop and go traf.

yeah but the thing is, 2 weeks ago my car wouldnt pass 185 unless it was really hot and traffic with the AC on, and even then only by just a bit!

water pump seems busted, car overheats both in traffic and on highways... but it seems like it happens sometimes yesterday night it overheated, today morning it seemed fine... today evening it overheated... i guess the water pump is at its final stages

185 is not overheating i think ur overreacting about it, its an engine with several thousands of RPMs how hot do u expect it to run?

oh i see, well i would suggest flushing your radiator, if not that then go get a new thermostat, and if not that then its ur water pump. Try those in that same process.
Sometimes coolant loses its chemical properties after time. And also if you dilute ur coolant remeber get DISTILLED water! Later

Here's something else you can check, make sure you don't have debris between the radiator and condenser, that can cause overheating

The LT1 runs very hot stock. I've never seen one that did not easily go above that if it idled long enough.
