Default Oil Change Overfill !!

Ok, so I wouldn't really consider myself a newbie, but I had my 6 qts of Mobil One in my car and I swung by a Valvoline to get it changed out on the way to the track. It was getting close and I figured fresh oil at the track would be nice. So, they drained it and I was shooting the **** with the manager, and I noticed they put all 6 qts in and fired it up, then shut it off and said it was way too full. Then they drained some out, but its still reading pretty high. Is it ok to have an extra 1/4 or so of a qt in there? I havn't driven it much since, and definatly not above 2 1/2k. My oil pressure seems to be a little higher. Wouldn't you know it started raining while I was in Valvoline so that plus the oil situation obviously sent me home and not out to the track.

It doesn't hurt anything to run an extra quart in there. Several guys on this board put an extra quart in every time.

Ive always heard it was really bad to have it over fiulled but there might be someting different about LS1s as im a newbie to em still. On older motors the crank would be swimming in the oil and slow ya down. Im sure its a great way to test the antifoaming capabilities of the oil though!

There are some pics on this site which Mitchntx put up a while ago which showed the stock oil pan off the car and he showed the level at which the oil would sit when overfilled by one quart. I believe he concluded that up to 1.5 over is completely safe with the stock oil pan. I've been running 7.5 quarts of oil in my C5 for a while now with no problems (stock capacity in the C5 is 6.5) My oil level never drops for the entire interval (last interval was 9k!) and my oil analysis results show very low engine wear and no signs that the oil is being overly stressed.

i have overfilled mine with 1 qt just to see if i noticed any differeance in how it runs, absolutely nothing.i tried the same thing in our 89 camaro and you know right away somethings very wrong.i started adding extra oil after going WOT on a curved entrance ramp and hearing unmistakable rod bearing knock.scared the bejesus out of me.i didn't get the noise driving straight line, only in curves.i wouldn't advise watching the oil pres gauge while WOT in a curve but thats how i realized it was starving for oil.i run 6 qts and havnt had any noise since.i add 1/2 qt when i see it shows full on the dip stick.makes oil changes easier too, just put 6 in.

Wow, Patmans post has thinking about adding a quart. So running an extra quart is good on the high cranked LSx...

Can you say how high he oil line was? 1-3" below the swing line?

I'm running 6L ie 6.3 quarts or close to that... have not had any issues whatsoever in running it hard. I'm also running the longer filter for my ls1 which maybe totals 0.2 quarts more... seems safe enough to go over capacity a bit like that.

Do you guys running 6+ quarts see a difference in oil pressure compared to before? In any/all driving conditions, idling, cornering, cruise, WOT, etc?

I am running Mobil 1 5w30 and have been noticing now that it's warming up I may only have 45psi at a 60mph cruise? I know that Mobil 1 5w30 is on the lighter side for that weight oil.

Are you using the stock pan? If so, then I would put 5 quarts or whatever ford calls for (I can't remember) Take a look at the 5.0's pan and gasket design the ones I owned leaked with the recommended amount. I'll look at my girlfriends 95 GT tomorrow, but I'm sure it's 5qts.
Or you could hop on over to stangnet they should know

If you need more oil capacity I know canton makes 7qt pans to fit Fox mustangs.
