Default Brake lights out.

So someone tells me my brake lights are out today. Check'em and sure enough they are, the third light still works. I checked the lights, good, fuses, good, the hazards even come on. I'm at a lost, any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! oh and i got a '01 ws6 if that helps any.

I had some accident damage repaired, (wheels, tires, brakes, suspension stuff) picked it up on Friday. But on the ride home from the shop they worked, and yesterday morning they worked too.

you're talkin' about the actual level in the steering column?

I'm try to resolve this same problem with my '02 Ws6. (Brake lights inop except for the brake light in the spoiler)

isn't that also called the "multifunction switch".... i HAVE heard and read that it can be the cause of these types of problems.

think about it for a minute. all of your light systems go through your turn signal switch in your column. high/low beams turn/hazards and brake lights. your 3rd brake light runs off a different wire system. even though only one brake switch is on your pedal for activation. your brake and turn are on the same circuit. so when the signal switch goes out it also affects your brake lights. changing the switch is fairly easy if you have the right steering column tools. you need the wheel puller and the lockplate tool. and while your there, if your tilt wheel is loose, now the the time to tighten them up to prevent further problems with that as well. as far as getting the old switch out, find the plug on the bottom of the column and just cut off the plug(make sure it's the right one first!!) then after you get the steering wheel off and lock plate, remove the three screws, the switch lever and the hazard switch, all you have to do is pull the switch with the wires out. installing the new one requires a little more persuading in getting the new plug down the column carefully.be careful of the air bag system though. if you can get a repair manual from a parts store, it's all in there. good luck!

****** a... all that for the damn brake lights. god damn GM, why couldn't it just be a burnt bulb?

I will look into what you said, could it possibly be loose connections to that switch and not a completely faulty unit?

If the turn signal switch was messin up, wouldn't all the other lights, signals, hazards, etc. be acting up too? Or are the brake lights always signaled out?

If one of your bulbs up front are out (signal bulb/daytime running light), it will affect your rear lights as well. Check that too.

believe it or not, surprisingly not. i'm not sure why but it always seems to be the brake lights. even on my '78 chev truck i have the same problem right now. just one of my brake lights quit working. i thought it was just a bulb, checked that. still didn't fix it. so i got out the electrical tools that i have, and everything traced back to the same goddamn thing in that truck. i backed up to a window, pressed the pedal and played with the switch, and sure enough, gm had the same problem 28 years ago! kinda makes you think about the people that design these things! i think that i would fire the son of a bitch that made those!

Does anyone happen to have any pictures, or more information on how to do this, I am having the exact same issue. I have the general know how to work on my vehicle and get stuff done, but I generally dont know the terminolgy.

This switch is *in* the steering column? .. pretty self explanatory, thats the black.. column :p that the steering wheel is attached to, right?

What are the wheel puller and the lockplate tool's? I'm assuming I cant just use a screw driver or some house hold tool to jimmy em off? Is this something a auto store might rent/lend out?

Before I tear my car apart any other information would be helpful
