Default RPMs flew up to redline and wouldnt stop

I was driving to work this morning and as I was getting ready to shift into 2nd, the RPMs flew up to 6500 and wouldnt come down. I wasnt on the pedal at all. Pulled over and turned the car off. Then back on. The rpm's flew up right away.

Started dicking around with wires under the hood and jabbing the gas pedal and started it again. Same thing. Then I put my foot under the pedal and lifed it up as high as it would go, same thing.

Went back to messing around under the hood and started it and it started fine, it sat 600. Drove to work and back home with zero problems.

Now, I assume it was something to do with the throttle cable, but would it go from one extreme to the other totally randomly like that?

The cable is probably partially broken, I would relace it now, it won't last much longer.

Sounds like the cable, it got snagged inside the sheath, and it wouldn't release, until you stated dicking with it, get a new one before it does that in a crowded street, or something equally as bad

What if this happened while you were in gear - isn't it difficult to push the clutch pedan in while there is load through the drivetrain? I've not tried, but can you cut the ignition with the key while driving normally?
