Nothing wrong with the newer 3.8L's. Plenty of parts for them and they last. You if like a car with thrill the V8 is your only option! I was able to get 28.5 MPG hiway out of my LS1 so I stuck with it. Resale on V8's is very strong but V6's might be more sellable as the years go by due to gas prices.

I've seen some scary 3.8's out there... most people buy them for insurance purposes, though it doesn't help a WHOLE lot sometimes... but you can mod the **** out of them for what they're worth... bit easier to put a twin turbo setup on a 3.8 than an LS1 ...
but, that all depends on who wants what

Optisparks aren't that hard to change(although time consuming) and they'll last an easy 70,000 miles on a stock/bolt on car, as long as you aren't spinning to 7k rpms they'll last awhile. One guy had his last 267k miles and then he bent a rod. I changed mine a month or two ago, took 3 hours for my first time, and it wasn't hard at all, just remove the fans and jack it up.

My old 94Z Opti made it to 108k miles. I then took it to the dealer to be detailed as I was planning on putting it up on ebay for sale and the dealer steamed the engine and wasted the Opti. You would think a Chevy dealer would know better. They had to replace the Opti for free. I had to wait an extra day but then I sold the car with a new "Opti".
