Default WS6 rear diff questions

Hey everybody, just some quick questions I hope you guys can help me with.

My friend has a WS6, and his rear end is making the howling/whinning noise (doesnt sound right haha)
I don't own any muscle cars, or I would just do the work for him...
Anyways, I did some research on here, and it seems like his rear diff might need a fluid change? Maybe with something a little thicker?

If this is the case, can someone tell me what kind, how much, and where to buy it? Also, he is leaving town soon and is probably just wanting to take it to some jiffy lube type place to have it done. Was wondering if these places actually can do that for him?

Thanks in advance

The oil should be changed inthe rear diff every 2 years.

When changing the oil, be sure to use the GM limited slip diff lubercant!
GM sells a 4oz bottle for under $10, any dealership will stock it.

They say use 2-4oz, I always use the entire 4oz, to eliminate any noises back there.

The specs for the oil are in his owners manual.

Thanks for the quick response!

Any idea where he could take it to have it done without going to the dealership and getting charged an arm and a leg?

He said he doesn't have the manual, or at least doesn't know where it is. Any of you Batmobile owners know what kind of fluid to use? I'd imagine he should go with something a little thicker than stock to get rid of the noise. He has about 75,000 miles.

Mobil 1 20-50W gear oil with the gm additive is what I use. I have 170K on mine and it was dead silent for about 10k miles. These rear's are noisy especially if it gets geared or has ever been serviced. The one's I have seen that have never been opened seem to be rather quite. After they are opened up for something simple like changing the cover they get louder and louder until

Use 80w 90 fully synthetic gear oil with a bottle of limited slip additive. Just drain it out and whipe off the magnet on the cover. Undo the plug on the side of the chunk and fill it up until it starts to run out. Put the plug back in and he's ready to go.

he called the dealer, I think he said they were asking $140 for fluid, new gasket, and labor.

His car is completely stock, so I doubt the rear has been opened unless it was serviced. Regardless, it's probably time for a change.

I hope your sig is a joke. haha V-Tech makes phones. =P

I would have the diff. fluid changed, but I would also have it checked to see if the rear end is going out. I had the same problem and drained the fluid, but still had the noise...turns out that my rear end had gone out. Good Luck.

He has a bearing on its way out. It's just gonna keep getting louder.
