An LS1 has died
At a stop light, the day before yesterday, my car died out. It turned itself off. All my gauges were fine. Everything seemed normal. I turned the car back on and it died immediately. The low coolant light was on. So I turned the car on, gave it some gas at idle to keep it alive, shifted to drive and rolled in to a gas station. I checked my coolant and it was fine! So I waited about 30 min for the car to cool off and checked the oil. I was about 3 quarts low?! So I put more oil in and start the car.
There was a knocking noise on cylinder 1.
I've tried starting the car up on several occassions to see if it's just piston slap but the knock remains and gets louder with reving. Sounds like I've spun a bearing. Appearantly, the previous owner didn't do a good job with oil changes and as soon as I bought the car I switched to synthetic and that may have cleaned out all the sludge and crammed it in to the motor. What do you guys think?
I am getting a new short block put in this wknd so everything should be okay.

the coolant light doesnt mean anything if your coolants full, that sensor goes out all the time
it sounds like youve got alot more damage in the motor then just in the number 1 cyl....pull the motor, pop the heads, the pan and the caps....see what exactly went wrong...post some pics, but for a car to die just because of some spun bearings doesnt sound right, i spun 2 and my car ran for another 1k miles until i decided what i wanted to do....if you have any block damage its honestly NOT WORTH THE TIME AND MONEY, when you can purchase a new block and get a stroker kit....like i said check back...id be interested in what went on in the motor

The car will start up but as soon as I put it in Drive it bogs down slowly until it dies. It will drive fine if I give it some gas. I've got it parked outside. I just didn't want to further damage it. I noticed before the car died the engine temp rose to 200+. That's when it died out.

127,000 are on the motor. I was using 5w-20 royal purple oil. I then found out that was way too thin. Would that have anything to do with the situation? What if I drained the oil and put thicker oil in? I thought about that but then I was told that once the knocking is there, it's there.
I wish I could just turn it on and the knocking would go away.

More than likely, with that mileage on her, she was drinking that 20w Royal Purple like it was soda pop. When she ran low, that was it. Not much protection for a 127k workhorse...rebuild her better than she was, and use the 30-40 weight oils.

I have also heard Royal Purple is pretty bad about thinning down too...DAMN THATS A LIGHT OIL!!!
