The LS1 feels strong so I don't care.

- DO NOT put mobil 1 xW-30 in your engine. would you put an xW-20 in your V8? because a mobil 1 30 weight is a borderline 20 weight. you'll get noise galore, burn more oil and your wear numbers will be through the roof over GC 0W-30. mobil 1 30W's DO NOT belong in an LS1 and i WOULD NOT put them in my car if they were free.
- if you're going to use a mobil 1 oil, i'd advise against 0W-40 - along with all of mobil 1's mainstream oils (5W-30, 10W-30, 0W-40). here's why:
what a lot of people don't know about mobil 1 is that it isn't the same oil it was a few years ago. mobil 1's 15,000 mile formula or whatever they use is REAL mobil 1. they realized that mobil 1 could go pretty long in between changes, so they took it and added a few dollars per quart to the price tag. then, they took their oil and dumbed it down and marketed it as mobil 1 and sold it for the same price. what you are buying now as mainstream mobil 1 oil is actually an inferior downgrade to the historical mobil 1.
if you're going to run mobil 1, don't run a mainstream oil. run mobil 1 5W-40, either the truck and SUV version or the turbo diesel version, either is fine. they are specially made oils and they are designed for trucks with larger clearances (such as our V8 LS1) and protect better against the harsh conditions that trucks see.
let's recap:
- i'm a fan of GC 0W-30. my engine makes a little noise with it but the universal wear numbers with it speak for itself. i intend to send this batch away for analysis.
- i'm a fan of mobil 1 5W-40. i hear great things and i will run it my next oil change and compare wear numbers.
if you can't find mobil 1 5W-40, sadly, you're stuck with 0W-40 (do NOT use a mobil 1 30 weight, please). just know that mobil 1 0W-40 does not protect as well as GC 0W-30...then again, not much does.
or should I just have it checked out???
