Default Whining sound

Well some of you may have this same problem, the trans whine is great and I love that, but I have this horrible high-pitched whine out of my rear-end and can't really tell what it is, it's pretty much unbearable, it's louder than my stereo can go and still overpowers my exhaust ... I suspect it may be the pinion? What do you guys think? How could I fix this??

Would that be something I could do by myself, never fooled with rear-ends before.

Just make sure it is indeed gear whine first, sometimes in rare instances a carrier bearing is the cause, check the oil level, or even pull off the inspection cover and check for metal shavings (not the typical "dust") on the magnet on the dif cover. Check for irregular wear on the ring gear. If gears are set up wrong and they form a pattern in them, simply re shiming them wont eliminate the whine, you need new gears at that point sucks huh?

As for setting it up, i wouldnt, and you will need a lot of special tools

How can I figure out for sure what the noise is coming from? How would I check out the rear-end without completely tearing it apart?

It's a pinion or carrier bearing. Unless you've done lots of hard launches on your factory gears and busted loose the pinion they're probably fine.

So how could I check the pinion and carrier bearing?

Once I open up the housing what should I see? Will I have to add any lubricants or anything after i open it up ?

If it is the pinion what is my best way to fix this?

You'd have to open the rear and look for debris. If you wanted to specifically check the carrier bearings, you'd have to pull off the bearing caps and yank out the whole carrier. You'll see pits and such in the rollers. I wouldn't mess with the pinion myself. You need to press to remove and press on the new bearings. Then you'd have to reset your pinion depth and backlash.

So in other words, don't mess with it and let a shop handle it??
