I mix equal amounts of Mobil 1 10W/30 and 15W/50 ===> 12.5W/40

It would be great if this were true, but the API gives a RANGE for each oil weight's cold performance (cSt @ 40*C), so there can be (and will be) a big variance in different oil's each labeled as a "5W" starting viscosity. This is especially true for the wide viscosity spread (5W-40, 5W/10W-50) vs. more narrow spread (5W-20, 0W/5W-30, etc.) oils, due mainly to the viscosity index improvers/pour point depressants needed to be added to the wide range oils in order to be within the range of the API specs of cSts @ 40* C & 100*C.

This is why I'm going to 5W-30 Red Line for the winter. We finally had cold weather here this morning (16* F). I still have the Red Line 5W-40 in my LS1 (almost a 95 cSt @ 40*C ). I've NEVER heard piston slap and lifter tick (more like CLATTER!) as bad as this before, and yes, it does run rougher until very warm because of this. But your Amsoil is thinner than this stuff at BOTH 40* & 100* C (see, there's that variance, even within two oils labeled the same viscosity), so just let it warm up a little more. You'll appreciate that oil when your area gets back to it's more normal, warmer climate!

So dailydriver it doesn't hurt anything to hear so much noise when cold. I let it warm up before I drive it. It is suppose to get back up now to lows above freezing. Maybe I should have chosen the Amsoil 30w but I planned on running it for 6-7 months which would be warmer weather. What is the cst at 40* on the 5w-40 Amsoil? I changed from 10w-30 Mobil 1 to this. In the past on my vehicles I ran 10w-30 dino oil all year long. I have a truck with a 350 engine. This car is more sensitive and is noisy.

chevygirl,

Relax, your car will be just fine. The AMSOIL 5w-40 is a great choice for your conditions all year round. 30*F is NOT that cold. Many people run a 5W and do start ups in -10 to -20F temps every morning.

I run the 0w-30 but this morning at 0F my Silverado started like it was 60F.

The specs for your 5w-40 are here: http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/afl.aspx?zo=1436102

As o2man98 posted, you WILL BE FINE with the Amsoil Euro. As the spec sheet says it is an 80.8 cSt @ 40* C (almost 15 points lower than the Red Line 5W-40 I was running, Amsoil FTW on that one!!). The 0W-30 Series 2000 (and even the 5W-30 Series 3000) would be too thin (on the cSt @ 100* C spec) for your area if this change is going to take you into the hot late spring/summer months

I run the Amsoil Euro 5w-40, its great stuff. Better pressure, less startup noise, etc. But I always let the car warmup before driving it around, so I wouldn't hear much noise anyways. Its a hell of a lot better than the dino junk that was in the car when I bought it.

Based off my experiences from last year, I'd recommend not going one whole year on the stuff. It seems like it got really thick, dirty, and more noise was prevalant on startup than usual. Seems like the extra noise started about 9 months into the cycle.

I will probably go 6-7 months tops on the cycle. I thank you for your info about your experience with it.

CORRECT! Even the Amsoil techs will tell/remind you that it is NOT an "extended drain period" oil like the Series 3000 stuff. (The Euro's TBN is 8.0 vs. the Series 3000's 12.0)

Well it has been 2 weeks and the car seems to be doing fine. Lowest oil pressure is like 35. The piston slap seems to be better when it is a little warmer outside. Drives fine. I seem to be not getting the same fuel economy and I won't know for sure until I go on a trip. I don't know if that is possible to have less fuel economy on this oil. I was getting 25 or better hwy. Just thought I would give an update.

Im using the same oil but I dont drive the car in the winter. I noticed a little bit of noise on startup but not much. It was dead quiet till it got kinda of warm actually then after I took a drive it idled really quiet and smooth.
