gonna see if they can add more weights or something, as paying for it and nothing is better is not fun. i wanted new wheels anyway, but dont have money for them, the stock swirled rims are one of the ugly gm rims they have come out with. granted my car looks like hell anyway, some of the guys have nice deals on used wheels here. but if the vibrating is the wheel hub or something causing this

i dont have a torque wrench, but i alternate when tightening them. i went to get them checked again, the guys said its the front end, and the wheels and tires seemed ok. they say its rack and pinion needs to be replaced, and possibly the reason the power steering is leaking is from this. i dunno. the rack and pinion installed is around $320 said a a arm or something was bad and thats $80 or so, total would be about $450

i asked a second place what the rack and pinion alone would cost, including alignment and they said $490 or more.

so i dunno what to do, the second shop said they would look at it for free, and might just be tie rods bad.

what do you guys think? after they rebalanced the tires, he mounted them, and while its on the lift, he could wobble the tire on the wheel hub sideways somewhat, a little sloppy on the passenger side, but a lot more play on the drivers side.

i dunno what to do as its more money than i was expecting. i told them i did not wanna fix something and still have the problem.

Well as far as my car, i did balance the front tires and it did fix it to a point. it still vibrates a little i quess because of the rear tires. But i am looking into getting some new rims in a couple of weeks with new tires.

When I had a bad tie rod my steering wheel would shake also, I also got some serious front tire ware too. I would look into that before spending a lot of money.

yeah im gonna have 2 places look at it that give free estimates to see if they say the same thing. first place wanted to replace everything without inspecting much, but i know somethings broke now, it just started doing this yesterday, sounds like metal on metal when i go over a speed bump, or a when the driveway has a dip between the street. on top of that it overheated again after only a couple minutes. its been fine since i replaced the radiator cap. gonna try a complete flush.

thanks for all the help guys, this is something i never fixed myself. and while i might be able to replace some of these things, it will take me longer, and might not be what the problem is. wish i paid attention during shop class in high school.

if i take the wheel off and the brake caliper and rotor, how do you inspect the wheel hub?

think like was mentionted in another thread im gonna look at putting a ls1 rack on it if i have everything busted. if its just the wheel hub, or a single tie rod ill leave it i think. after those parts are replaced.

my roomates buddy is a retired mechanic, so he helped me look at it briefly tonight. it was pissing power steering fluid everywhere, so we gunked it down and hosed it off. then turned the wheels to pump the fluid. and he pulled a loom that covers one of the hoses and it sprayed fluid. so thats one problem, hopefully the only one related to the power steering. he thinks the tie rod is bad, but will check that out sat or sunday after we replace the hose. im a novice at most of this besides some maintenace and a few odd repairs.

i just hope its not the entire rack being bad, because i have enough money to fix only that, if its other smaller things, i can prolly fix all of them one after the other and be ok. he offered to teach me most **** so hopefully it turns out ok.

thanks for all the help so far guys.

so the power steering pressure hose had a leak, got that replaced which was a major pita to do. and the steering is much better, but it still vibrates like hell. he does not think its the rack. he was thinking ball joints or the wheel hub. but wanted me to get a alignment done , he said it would show everything thats wrong if i get the printout and anything they think is bad. i hate spending money for a alignment since i know there is a problem. but he said its the best way. but hes not charging me for labor, just beer and food so its not to bad.

was going to have the alignment done, but the store said they would look for a problem first, they say its both outer tie rod ends. me and a friend are gonna try to do those this week. i bought the parts but im hoping that it solves the wheel shaking, if not ill look at the bearings and hub next or just replace them both, prolly worn out anyway even if not busted.

well got the outer tie rod ends swapped out in 15 minutes mainly while i watched my buddy and some dude help, and the car is a bit better, but it still shakes, it shakes worse when letting off the throttle and say every 2-3 seconds it shakes, no matter how smooth the road is. i dunno what else to check at the moment. i need to grease the tie rod ends fittings unless they pack them greased already, but i doubt it since the fittings were not installed already and it looked clean. but i dont think thats causing the shaking.

so wheel hubs cant act like that can they? what about ball joints? shocks? or springs? i dunno where else to look for problems. worst part is im broke for 2 weeks prolly unless some side jobs come through. or i sell some old firebird parts i have.

i have cheapo new shocks for the rear, and some used ones with newer springs for the front. i guess ill try replacing those and see what happens, but i dont think it will solve the problem.
