I picked up some CRC QD Electronic Cleaner from Pep Boys just now. I saw the regular "Lectromotive" stuff, but this seemed better suited to the task. I also needed it to clean the contacts on a cell phone
I'll post back once I try it.

Just cleaned mine. I used the CRC MAF cleaner, I figured it's well worth the $7 to use the right stuff, MAF sensors are very expensive, and delicate. The sensor has three little elements, and I could see that two of them were gunked up on the intake side. I tried spraying them down a few times, but the gunk was still there, so I took a q-tip, sprayed a little cleaner on it and gently wiped the ends down to get the gunk off. Just took it out for a spin, I don't notice any difference. It used to knock a little bit once in a while under heavy throttle at high rpms, I didn't notice any of that. Regardless, I feel better knowing it's done.
I also cleaned the MAF on my Ford Escort with the same stuff. That car was knocking a little in warm weather, I will have to wait til summer to see if it's fixed. One thing I noticed on that car is that one of the ends looked whitish, almost like it was corroded or something. It looked a little better after I sprayed it.

I have the stock MAF sensor which has not been descreened. Can I just take off the air filter housing and the rubber boot up to the maf sensor and leave it on the car and spray the CRC cleaner up in there or do I have to disconnect things and take the sensor out of the car completely? It is my first time trying this. I overoiled my K & N filter and now I have a rough idle on cold starts.

CRC MAF cleaner.
But I DO recommend using a Q-Tip to clean them 100%. Bend the tip 90 degrees and GENTLY whip the thin sensor wires on the incoming air side. You're not going to break them unless you really push/pull hard on them. Just be gentle. The MAF sensors WILL get cleaner. Dirt over the years gets caked on and builds up alot.

A can of CRC MAF cleaner goes a long way. You can propably get a dozen cleanings out of a can. Make sure you unplug the MAF and keep your damn keys away from the ignition, you don't want any power to the MAF.
And I am going to respectfully disagree with RPM WS6 about the Q-tip cleaning. You really should not touch the wires with anything unless you are VERY carefull. I know you are, but it's not the best advice for everyone. Repectfully.

But I would like to warn you, one of my instructors (who worked for GM for a very long time) told me that even MAF cleaner can leave a thin residue leading to a slightly false reading. He said the best way to clean them is rubbing alcohol and a Q tip.

When I removed the air filter lid there was quite a bit of bugs and trash on the screen to the MAF. I took a purdy soft paint brush and gently brushed it off. I assume this screen is not the part that is delicate anyway. My mechanic said use q-tips and alcohol too but everything seems to think not to touch the wires. I ran out of time so I put everything back together and I will wait until I have more time. My car is not real bad but it has changed since I reoiled the filter which I discarded since so I would not be making it worse.

The rubber boot that connects to the lid I noticed yesterday has seperated on the bottom side and I tried to fix it back. It won't go back like it should so I am going to get a new piece one next week. I have a friend that works at GM and hopefully I won't have to buy the whole lid. It is a very small seperation. I can't believe it would have sucked in that stuff there but I guess it did.
