For simplicites sake I just run Royal Purple as it's avaliable locally and is good oil, if I had the money or wanted to hassle with it I would run Amsoil or something along those lines lol.

mobil 1 USED to be a quality oil. now that exxon owns mobil, they're flushing their name down the toilet. the manstream oil (30W's) shear quite a bit. they're converting their oils from fully synthetic to group III...ehh. i'm running mobil 1 5W-40 right now. i'm not impressed. i'm getting less oil pressure once warmed up than GC 0W-30, even though the mobil 1 5W-40 is a thicker oil all-around. no decrease in engine noise, either. meh. mobil 1 = overrated.

Just the opposite here- I ran Mobile 1 for about 60,000 miles and always burned at least 1 quart every 3000 but after trying RP and now german castrol I burn about a half of a quart every 4000

That is the usually why people switch to Royal Purple over Mobile 1. I went from loosing 1-1 1/2 quarts every oil change to almost a half a quart now. I use Royal purple 10W40, and the car likes it.

Talk about a dead split, it was 13/13/13 when I voted.

Anyway, Castrol 0w30. Helps reduce oil sucked into the intake through PCV system

I think Mobil 1 is still a good choice of oil for an LS1 so long as you stick to the 0w or 5w 40 varities.

I have no intention of switching to the GC stuff. Not worth the hassle of hunting for it, or having to buy online, IMO.

This has always been a very difficult topic.....I just did my cam swap...and my car with an ls6 ported pump is at 38 psi....I run mobil 1 10w30 synth. Everyone's telling me to switch to royal purple or redline....if anything...I might switch to royal purple.

i've been using the mobil 1 5-30 and burn 1 quart ever oil change (3000-4000 miles).

i read in one of the oil threads that someone said that mobil has a better oil that was not the synthetic. it was either the 5000, 7000, or high milage one(i don't remember). it was being marketed as lower quality than the synthetic but is actually better than the synthetic.

what i don't get is how the manufacturer mobil says that you can go 7500 miles on the less expensive oil without a change while the synthetic is to be changed around 3500. yet the synthetic is better?

someone please let me know if i'm wrong because i'm about to switch to the high milage 10-40 soon.

All those brands suck, everyone knows to unlock all the power out of your engine, especially the torque, you need to use the quaker state advanced formula, the commercials prove it, just look at all those horses next to the car.

I dont think you could find a bit of difference between the two synthetics. I use Mobil 1 in all my cars, just because of recommended (probably paid) endorsements. Both are quality, much higher quality than Dino Oil.

mobil 1 30W's are just cheap oils. they're heavily marketed, mass-produced oil. when exxon bought mobil, they started cutting corners. they're turning a once fully-synthetic line of motor oils into group III synthetics, which are crude-based oils that undergo heavy refinement. exxon is offering a lower-quality oil and selling it at a higher price because they control the exceptional history of the mobil 1 name. before mobil sold out to exxon, mobil 1 was a much better oil than it is now.

i don't know much about the mobil 1 extended life oils. this is what i HEARD: what i heard was that for their extended life synthetics, that is their original mobil 1 formula. they realized mobil 1 was good enough to run much longer than advertised. they then bumped the price up a few dollars per quart and marketed it as extended life oil when it was their original formula. they then created a lower quality oil and marketed it as normal mobil 1. this is the story i was told.

as for your oil consumption issue, if you prefer to stay within the mobil 1 name, consider switching to their 0W-40, or even better yet, their 5W-40 if you can find it. personally, i'd recommend GC 0W-30. it's a higher quality oil than anything mobil 1 makes, should cut consumption and is 100% fully synthetic. i decided to stray from GC 0W-30 and use mobil 1 5W-40 in my last oil change. i lost around 5 psi oil pressure all throughout the range once warm (obviously the pressure is a little higher now when it's ice cold).

gc 0w30

Getting kind of hard to find around here. None of the Autozones in town had any when I needed some recently. Was doing a job in a town 20 miles from here, decided to check their Autozone while I was heading out. As luck would have it, they had a full shelf runner thing of it, so I picked up 7 quarts. 6 for the change, and one spare as a "topper".
