Thats a good question. On my lt1 it screws out. On the vortec max in my pick up it just pulls off and has an oring to seal it. It has to be one or the other.

Don't you have to release it from inside the valve cover?

valve cover is off.. im looking at it from the inside... now... there is a little tab in there that is flush with the inside... if you twist the neck to take it out.. the tab bends inward so you can not remove the neck... its like i need to fit a very thin, curved piece of metal in there to push the tab up, but i can get a damn thing in there

anyone esle?

You have to first remove the bolt holding it to the head and then just pull. I had to wiggle mine out while pulling.

Just buy a new one.

Put the oil neck in a vise, then turn the valve cover counter clockwise, look at how it locks into place to make sure it's counter clockwise. They pretty much lock in place when there installed. I doubt you can do it by hand or with pliers, I had to use a vice when I took mine out.

You might break the tabs when you try and remove it, that's why I said to buy a new one. That's what I did when I had my valvecovers powdercoated, the neck is under $10.

Will the metco breathers screw directly in the valve covers with out the filler neck?

Default How ro remove oil filler neck

I developed a way.. you carefully thread a small safety wire underneath the tab, pull the tab up and twist the neck out. No breakage, but definitely like building a ship in a bottle. You need patience.

2021 update-
I was able to use a slim bladed pocketknife between the wall of the valve cover and the outer neck of the fill tube to press the tab inward. Took about 30 seconds.

To remove the fill neck you'll turn it counterclockwise 180 degrees and pull.

That will break the tab and render the fill neck unusable. The tab must be depressed first. The tab is there so the neck does not come off when you remove the cap.

Default It was actually fairly simple ...

It took me hours and gave me fits, but, here is how to do it. There are two tabs at opposite poles. Gently bend the tabs outwards (with a small screwdriver) as you push up on that side of the locking mechanism. You will work the locking mechanism above the ridges and up the tracks. After you get past the two first ridges, you can simply remove the neck by twisting counterclockwise. Seating the assembly on the new valve cover is no picnic either. This is one weird design. No words.
