Default Rear end fluid change

Is this what I should pick up (its whats listed in car manual):

SAE 75W-90
Synthetic Gear Lubricant
GM# 12378261

&

Limited Slip Differential Lubricant Additive
GM# 1052358

Can I pick this up at any Pontiac dealer, and what price does this usually run

Thanks for help

Get it from a local parts supplier, it is cheaper than the dealership.

Royalm Purple is really good as well and already has the slip additive in it.

You're incorrect. I get RoyalM Purple from the Dollar Tree all the time. I can't post a link though because the Dollar Tree is not a sponsor here.

The limited slip additive is only like $8 from a dealer (was when I got it last year) and won't hurt anything. Nothing wrong with a little safety first. I went with Redline 75w90 when I changed out. Haven't had any issues since. The rear is still in one piece after 62k miles.

i went today to the dealership or should i say the stealership. its $28 for a quart of the synthetic rear end fluid and he said we need 3 quarts, so that should be around $100, and then he said i should change the gasket and the pinion seal, but those are not expensive. is royal purple just as expensive or cheaper, and should i go ahead and change the pinion seal??

2 quarts, please. Any more and you run the risk of blowing out your wheel bearing seals. I get my fluid either at AutoZone or Pep Boys. I use the Royal Purple because it has the limited slip additive already in it. Also get the gasket and some Permatex Ultra Copper RTV. That is all you need. I have mine sitting right here, because I am going to change out my gear and will have to do this again. Be sure and put the RTV on both sides of the gasket.
I don't have the receipt with me, but it seems that it was around $50 or less for everything.
$28? Geez, no wonder I avoid them at all costs.
Oh, and I am looking at the bottle right now, it says Royal Purple, no "M".

If your pinion seal isn't leaking, don't bother. It's kind of a PITA, and judging by your post (no offense) it would be better off having a reputable shop do it.

You'll need a torque wrench, and a few other misc. tools to get the job done.

You can go ahead and get 2 qts. Mobil 75-90 synth. gear lube or Red Line. Whatever synth. oil floats your boat. I use the Mobil Synth.

While you're at Autozone, get Felpro gasket #RDS 55072.

RTV is a silicone sealer used to aid in sealing (in this case) the dif. cover. Get a tube of High Temp RTV sealer. Apply a thin even coat on each side of the Felpro gasket. It will be easiest to apply a thin coat to one side of the gasket, and line it up on the dif. cover. Then apply the thin coat on the opposite side and go ahead and reinstall the dif. cover on the axle.

Once you've got that all set, a 3/8" ratchet, or extension will fit right into the fill plug on (I believe) the drivers side of the differential. Add your 2 qts, re-install the fill plug and you'll be ready to go.

Absolutely, he is a moron. Never, never go there again. And if your pinion seal is not leaking, leave it the fork alone. It sounds to me like he was trying to steal from you because he saw you were a newbee.
The RTV is a high temperature sealant. It will prevent leaks, which are at least unsightly, and at best messy. The Ultra Copper is one of the best, in the opinion of the mechanic who does occasional work on my car.

It's allright. The best you can buy would be McKanicka. Which comes in an aerosol type cheez wiz tube. It's expensive, but has a squeeze action, as well as adjustable tip so you can apply the RTV much cleaner/easier.

Then you could use the rest for a party on your Ritz crackers. You'd be the hit of the party.
