Default Engine Coolant Light

Okay, so recently my car has been throwing up a low engine coolant light. The coolant is full. So i assumed it was the sensor... went to auto zone and had them order an engine coolant sensor. This is what i got...

More than likely this isn't the right piece to fix my problem, and it just regulates the temperature of it and not the capacity. So is this the wrong piece? and if so, where can i order the correct piece. (The engine coolant light comes on when the engine coolant is full). And since i bought this sensor what the hell, i ought to replace it, so is this the right place?

Thanks for all the help, i am pretty new to all of this so i appreciate everyone's thoughts/input

wrong sensor man. That is a coolant TEMP sensor. The light that is on is your coolant LEVEL sesnor. You need the coolant level sensor that is attached to the radiator right under the radiator fill cap on the back of the radiator.

That's the ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor - the low coolant sensor is something totally different - it's a few inches below the radiator cap in the radiator itself (and more expensive).

Don't even sweat the coolant level sensor. Just unplug it and the light will go off.

Mine crapped out, I decided not to replace it, just unplugged it, since it seems from what I read here that they just fail anyway and the light comes back. If I'm just going to assume it's a bad sensor when that light comes on, what's the point? I just check my coolant regularly.

They're not all that reliable to begin with. I think you have to have a low condition for a couple of start stop cycles before it will trigger. GM discontinued them in the later models for a reason.

I replaced 2 of these things in my Z before I put a new hose kit on the car. When I started the hose job, the light was on but the coolant was full. After the hoses, the light has never come back on. It seems that after I replaced the coolant line that runs under the battery tray it fixed the issue. I didnt flush the system while the hoses were off or anything like that, the car was apart for maybe 8 hours without coolant (the heater hoses were 6 hours of that ). Just something to think about while your in there I suppose.
