in my impala ss 96 replacing the whole starting the car part (where you put your starting key) solved the problem .... don`t know if it came with the master key but had to make another spare key.

and it was a shop that told me that it was the problem.

This thread has nothing to do with the Generation III External Engine section, so I moved it here to the General Maintenance & Repairs section.

Please post in the correct sections.

Back on topic.

Do you have another key? If so try it, if not you can go to the dealership and they can cut you a new key. Sometimes the chip on the key goes bad/weak. Also try cleaning the key, or wipe it on your pants.

But I know its your VATS system. If you have serious issues with the car still after cleaning the key and trying another one then you should look into either replacing the ignition switch (tumbler) like Bader-X mentioned, or doing the by-pass mod and not have anti-theft (key only).

Now after you find out what it was reply in this thread and let us know. That will help your fellow LS1TECH.com members trouble shoot if they have the same issues and they try a search and see this thread.

Peace,
Craig.

Bringing this back from the deadz0rz.... My 2000 v6 firebird just started doing this. I've used both sets of keys and cleaned them both to no avail. How hard is it to disable the VATS? Am I better off getting a new key cut? Help me out Cragermeiser!!!

You're better off getting a new key or a new tumbler...whatever one has gone bad.
