Default I'm stumped...

ok, last night the car start knocking from what sounded like the rear end. the sound starts slowly and gets progressively faster with more throttle. however, it doesn't seem to be affecting the driveability as of now. the ride is still smooth like it should be, it just makes noise. the sound is not heard in neutral or reverse. it only makes noise in the forward gears (it's an a4 by the way). i dropped the drive shaft and all the u-joints are fine. the tail shaft in the transmission appeared to be loose, but with the drive shaft in place there was no excessive movement so i eliminated that. i tried the best i could, but i can't determine exactly where the noise is coming from or what it could be. any ideas? it's kinda urgent because this is my daily driver and it needs to be fixed. thanks.

dont be so quick to believe its the rearend, noise in these cars travels pretty easily.....check your fluid levels, bushings and exhaust mounts

If you're sure it's coming from the rear end pull the cover and see what's in there. That's kind of the noise my other car made in the weeks before my rear end grenaded on me.

so i took it to a shop and it turns out i broke the pinion. there are a few teeth missing from it. i always heard the 10 bolt was week, but i never thought i could break it. unfortunately i've got to take my chances with another set of gears because i can't afford a 12 bolt.

my gears were richmond's and a friend of my dad's installed them and he claimed he had done it multiple times before. but i'm not sure i guess it could have been a freak accident or something.
