Default Fuel Guage Short or Something?

For about the past 2 years (lol) my fuel guage has been broken. It sits on empty 90% of the time, gives an accurate reading 7% of the time, and gives a completely false reading 3% of the time.

I don't even know where to start with fixing this one... but I'm tired of running out of gas. Anyone got any ideas?

My only suspicion is that my subwoofer has actually shaken some of that wiring apart or something. I do have 470w rms pounding in the hatch a lot of the time.

i'm not sure how the gauge works on these cars so i wouldnt know how to tell you how to fix it. i just wanted to say you could count miles so you wont run out of gas. fill up around 250 per tank and you'd never run dry.

I suppose I could do that... but I just wanna fix it. I tried having the local dealership look at it. They refused to. They said they do not work on cars with more than 150k miles! How bout that ****? Pissed me off.

Surely someone's dealt with this one before... I just don't know where to start. I guess it either has to be the sending unit or the wiring.

PM your email address - I will send you troubleshooting steps from a service DVD for 2000. You can jump a connector to test your fuel gauge before you start yanking your sending unit out of the fuel tank (the pdf will outline which connector to use).

I have heard of such things in the last couple of years. plus if they want to work on it if it is more than 10 years ago. they know they can get enough work already so they just cut out all the "hard" work to do.

I got a replacement sender from o reilys for approx 250 dollars with a lifetime warranty. I doubt it is a wiring issue unless ur car has been seriously messed with before. if you are up to replacing the sender i would aim for that first.

They dont sell it seperately but maybe you could get the sender used from someone on ls1tech?

You could try putting a multi meter acrost the leads for the fuel tank level sensor and see if it has a reasonable resistance.
