Hi, I can't get my car out of park, the car starts up and idles perfect but then when i try to put the car in gear it wont leave park. I went to an auto parts store and purchased a new solenoid. Im wanting to put it in but i get seem to get the center console off. I got every thing unbolted and i got the back of the console off completly but the front end of the console near the stereo controls doesn't seem to want to come off. Also i need to know how to remove the shifter. If you also have any advice or tips on installing the solenoid that would be sweeet.

another thing you might want to check is the linkage, i had a buddy with an auto and he couldnt get any gears and we looked under his car and the linkage cable fell off the tranny. just an idea

to get it home put in in Neutral(N) and try starting it. i've seen this happen on a few cars. it wouldn't come out of park with the car started but with just the key on put your foot on the brake and put it in neutral then start it. not sure what the problem has always been but if that works you would atleast be able to take it home and work on it. hopefully that helps if not maybe someone else will chime in

buy a 6 speed????? j/k
jack car up and look at the linkage attached to side of tranny. and or take off linkage on trans and see if it will move back and forth. if it does. then you know its not the trans and it has something to do with shifter assembly

I cant jack the car up... im not using a jack and putting my life in the POS jack's hand. i cant move the car OBV. cause it wont go into gear so there is no way to get the car to a lift... Im going to try replacing the solenoid but i cant figure out how to get the center console off completly and the shifter. once i do that my dad is confident that he can replace the solinoid.

look on the shifter, theres a staple on the front side that u have to get a knife of pliers to pull it out, its kinda tough and be carful with it.
if the shifter cant be moved to N then the consol wont come off due to tight spot under the dash.
best to jack up the car and check the linkage

do you have to step on the brake to get the car out of park? maybe the brake switch is broken... the way to test it would be to jump the solenoid on the starter, if it starts then thats your problem.

At least your motor didn't die like mine did coming home from class one day. It's been almost ten months since then and I still don't have the car running....I suck lol. I was stuck without a job for a while and that put a seven month delay on it. I guess what I'm trying to say is: don't hesitate, figure out what's wrong and get it fixed cause downtime BLOWS!

I use to have a Caddy that would do that to me. What I would do to unlock it was turn the steering wheel as much as possible while moving the shifter until I could get it into neutral and then start the car. Might give it a go just to see if you can get it to unlock again.

I had the same exact problem. It's not the selenoid. it's the shifter mechanism..Trans shop replaced it for me. I didn't save the part & don't have a part number. The part looks like the shifter, about 7" long..Hope that helps a little bit..I live in a safe area..All i did for a couple years was to keep the car in Neutral(have to keep the key in the ignition) and just kept the alarm on & put a ball cap over the ignition so no-one could see the key. Ghetto I know, but it worked.

To swing the console to expose the shifting mechanism - open up the between seats glove compartment lid (remove 3 screws that hold the lid), remove the coin holder by sliding it upwards. There will be 2 more screws. Remove them. Now you can pop the console off and swing to the right. The parking brake handle will have to be down.
If you can move the shifter to Neutral, you can swing the console almost perpendicular. I had to do it to install the gauge next to the cig. lighter. Like you I couldn't figure out how to remove the darn handle.
Good luck.

It might be the brake switch.
You can test the brake switch by stepping on the brake pedal and have someone behind the car confirm whether or not the brake lights come on.
That would probably be easier to diagnose and repair than digging into the console.
