Default Another #8 Spark Plug Question.

Yes I have the print out from installuniversity and have searched through endless posts about the same problem...

I just bought my 98 Formula...BONE STOCK so stock manifolds, decided to change my plugs tonight with the step-by-step on installuniv. Pulled two wires off and they broke so went and bought new wires. Driver side was a piece of cake for me as well at the front 2 on passenger side. I removed the single coil packs (98 so single packs instead of one rail) and i removed the AIR out of the way. Tried from the bottom with no luck.

Probably spent 2-3 hours just on #8, tried everything possible. Hands are swollen, bleeding and I am so pissed. I even went and bought this swivel they call for, no luck since it would not lock in place. Any help please? The car is back together but I need to still change the #8 plug.

jack it up and get it from the bottom, i can't remember if the stock manifolds let you but thats what i did when i had my shorttubes, and if it helps drop the starter, then you can reallly reach it

you got it.... i did my #8 from the bottom before i had headers. With the LT Headers i can change all 8 in under 15 minutes. Best investment i made.

My Formula has stock exhaust so doesn't that effect coming with the bottom? I have average size hands and it is a royal PITA to try from the bottom. I even jacked the car up to a good height and even with a friend helping somewhat, I had no luck. And when I finally got it somewhat ready, it would fall off.

Anyone have any pictures or could you please take a picture of the exact tools I need to get it done? I hate to have to pay someone for one freaking plug when the others were so easy.

There is no reason to remove the individual coil for the '98s on the passenger side.

And I would never do #8 from the bottom. Not sure how anyone can.

I just remove the AIR tube from the passenger side, and almost lay across the top of the engine to reach #8 from the top. It's not easy, but that's the quickest way, IMO. I use a swivel with tape around it, and a slim line ratchet.

Moving to General Maintenance & Repairs...

The number 8 plug is the easiest of all from under the car. I did it the first time from above and it did suck. From underneath, you can clearly see the plug. #8 is now the easiest since you can actually see it thread into the head.

I had a hell of a time with #8 and I also crushed the fan motor housing
for the a/c and heat with the socket wrench. I had bloody hands and
I broke a couple of the wires.I think I'm due for another change and dreading it.

+1, I dont know why every one is going from the bottom, I kneel on the battery and allmost laydown in the engine bay with a swivel to get to it! Its a bitch any other way, just stay patient, and youll get it!!

go buy a spark plug socket, it has wrench flats on the sides of it. Put it on the plug, then use a wrench to loosen it. Hope that helps.

Any pictures of what your talking about?

And I tried from the top, the space was just so small I could not get my hands in enough to try that route and the swivel didn't help me any. Im also dreading to attempt it again, hoping someone locally to me can help out.

That the way i was able to get to the number 8. i think it helps too if you have a strut tower brace bar so you can use it for leverage.

I had no problems at all when I removed the AIR and coils. It is tight but I use the 1" extension with the plug socket and can maneuver it onto the plug, the 1" extension is long enough for the ratchet but short enough for me to get everything on there. Put the socket on there first with the extension, then the ratchet.

Ended up finding out tonight that the spark plug got pushed and the socket will no longer go on the plug. A small piece of the ceramic broke but the car is still driveable and runs fine just something I will now need to take care of. New Head? Or is it possible if the spark plug is extracted to lined it back up? Thanks

And thanks to the guy that helped me tonight, unsure of your name on here!

Im not sure, can't say it is stripped since when you push the spark plug socket over the plug, it just goes on about 1/2 way but then gets stuck. We seem to think that the spark plug bent and is now lodged sideways to make it uneven to fit the spark plug socket around it? Any ideas? Thanks
