Default Can LS1 be started by pulling?

I can't start it by "jump start" or how it is called (connecting to other car battery). Seems like engine is flooding itself (it's -4C here now).
So, can I start it by pulling?

Yes it will start if pulled.

If the engine is turning over when "jumped" and you think it is flooded. The owners manual says to hold down the gas peddle to the floor to signal the ecu that flooding has occurred and crank the engine over again.

If you have access to a timing light hook it up to one of the spark plug wires to verify that you have spark.

Also at the shrader valve on the fuel rail, check fuel line pressure.

No matter how complicated an engine gets it is still just fuel, air and spark.

Cool. I created this topic because owner manual clearly says NOT TO start it by pulling or pushing

About flooding ang accelerator to the floor - I didn't quite understand the sequence, how it has to be done?

To start a flooded engine, press and hold the accelerator to the floor while cranking the engine. This may take a while if it's flooded badly. Continue to hold the accerator partway down until the engine starts to run smoothly. If it's flooded bad enough you may need to clean the plugs to get it started.

I have suspicion that plugs are wet, but wouldn't want to change them on a street in this weather

Page 2-34 of my 2002 owners manual says how to start a flooded engine.

My car wasnt flooded but I "kick" started it at the track once when my battery died. Had a slight incline and just movin a mile an hour or two. It started pretty easy.

The owners manual is right. Clearly it is a bad idea. No brainer.

I said yes to your question because it is true. Not that I would recommend it.

What I tried to make clear is that with gas, air and spark an engine will run.

If the engine is not running then I recommend you investigate those requirements. Not push or pull the car. No amount of pushing or cranking on a car without fuel, air and spark will make it run.

Also get the battery charged or if it is a bad battery replace it.

-4c is not very cold for a gasoline engine.

This is an online community, I'm sure you can find someone there in the flesh who has basic engine skills to help. It is not a rocket ship, it is a car.

Thanx guys, after a bit of pulling it finally started At least now I'll be able to change plugs in my garage, not on the street.

KENS, -4C is cold for me to change plugs on a street and also it seems like my engine wasn't tuned too good, it won't run when not warmed up without pressing gas pedal, whether in summer or winter. In winter it just got worse.

So I still can't see why manual says that you MUST NOT do this. If it helps and doesn't do any harm - then why it is a bad idea

it not really bad for the engine if you do it right. owners manual probably says no cause it knows that people dont know how to do it right. if you are going to roll start it get up to about 2-3 mph, and let off the clutch in 2nd gear gently till the car kicks, then push the clutch back in, and viola the car is started. i asked about 5 different techs at my school (i go to uti) about this because i thought it wasnt bad, and some people were telling me i was killing my car. ... and i got the same answer. i had a bad starter for about a month in my lt1, and i would just park on hills, and roll start it in 4th. its only bad if you make the car jolt, and buck when you try to do it..

FWIW I the '75 nova in my sig originally had a manual trans and a sticker in the glovebox that said push starting may damage the emission system. Back then there wasn't much to the emission system, so I agree it's just a warning avoid problems with people doing it wrong.

Speaking of doing it wrong. There was this guy with a hatch back trying to start his car while it was moving... in reverse. I helped him push it forward and got him on his way though.

I believe someone once explained it to me that when you dump you're clutch it throws everything up into you're flywheel and actually has a certain amount of backlash on your flywheel and you're starter everytime you do this, which of course you beat against something so many times it's going to break.

The funniest:

Roommate flipped ranger.

Hydrolocked Engine.

Tried to clutch start it.

Locked up tires and spun truck 20 degrees. Through the guy still pushing into the bed.

Hilarity.

Did he (and you) know that starter is operated only when you are pressing the key into "Start" position?

I think you should throw it on a train track like the Doc did with the Delorian and let the train push it up to 85mph and then kick it over.... Bonus is that you'll go back to the future and get to see what your wife is gonna look like 20 years later. ...Come back to the present and dump her ***!
