Take some rubbing alcohol and rub it on the resister of the key to clean it off. Clean the whole key to while you are at it. You may want to take a qtip and let it get damp with alcohol and then run it inside your ignition switch. This should fix it up if you don't have another key.

Try the previously mentioned stuff first, if it still stays on you may have a cut wire at the key cylinder for the vats system. I've seen many cars start and run for a short time ofter the wire is cut (or intermitant contact). After that, it's tow truck time. Unfortunatly the only real way to check that wire is to pull the steering wheel and take the upper column 'guts' apart. It takes some special tools to do that, most of which are availible at the local Autozone. HTH

If the security light is on but the car starts and runs fine then it is reading the resistor in the key fine. There is some other problem. If it was the resistor in the key not being read then it wouldn't start.

I were having the same problem, my security light stayed on for about two months. the car would start and run good everyday but I knew that it was going to happen one day, then one moring got ready to leave for work and I wouldn't start. I'm glad I was at home when it happen. You can by-pass the VATS system and save a few dollars.

See my post "Yukon wont stay broke long enough to fix it". This sounds like the same thing.

My buddys TA was having it the light come one at times than one day it just didnt start and had it towed, we knew it was the ignition stuff, the wires come loose with time. Towed it to the delaership to have it replaced they kept insisting it was something else, changed this and that and nothing, so we told the stealership to just replace the key set up thingy and it fired up. A couple months later the light comes backon and this time it stays on just like your ride he can drive it and all, but the brakes feel like there engagedm not sure if its due to the light or it thinking its off or what. We swapped out his entire sterring collum with a spare one that I had laying around with 24k on it. And we fired it up and the light is still on, still has the problem no fix yet? Not sure if the bcm would have anything to do with this either.

The reason the light is on and it will still start is because the lock cylinder failed after the bcm received the correct resistor value. The default is to turn on the lamp and disable the passkey system. However, if you disconnect the battery and it loses memory next time you crank it you will be walking. All the problem ever is is a bad lock cylinder, replace it and go on about your day. You can bypass it with a simple resistor but then they can just smash the column and steal it like they did the old 73-87 trucks back in the day. All it takes is a big hammer and a screw driver and your ride is gone in less then a minute provided you do not have an aftermarket alarm.

i had to replace my vats system about a month ago , took it to a dealer cost me 700 bills and of course my extended warranty did not cover it. And yeah the problem was the the contacts in the ignition itself that touches both sides of chip in the key, they just wear down after awhile

Not off hand it would be monday before I can check at work. But even buying it over the counter it must be coded to match the vin for the key cut and resistor value. and the replacment keys are id'd by the vin also.
