i did in my 95 TA, basically got some tough engine cleaner and de-greaser and let it sit for about 20 minutes then hosed it off. Just have to be careful on where you spray a lot of the the water. Just use common sense with it.

I go to the dollar store and get this stuff called Awesome Orange. It's a knockoff of Billy Mays' famous Orange Clean. It's basically a degreaser for countertops or really anything at all. It's all natural and doesn't have all those chemicals in it that can cause your block to turn white. Spray a few sprays onto the affected area, let it sit for 1 minute and gently hose it off. It takes all the gunk off. I love the stuff and you can't beat the price!
It helps if the engine is warm. NOT BOILING HOT! Drive your car to full operating temps, let it cool down for 20 minutes with the hood up, spray the Orange Clean/Awesome Orange on, let it sit for 1 minute and gently hose it off.

I used simple green automotive, it wasn't that dirty. First time was ok, I let it run a long time to dry out.
Second time it ruined a knock sensor and had to pull the intake to replace them both. The front one was very rusty. There is a TSB out for the GM techs, it says when replacing these to seal them up with silicone sealer. It also says this is a common problem for people who wash their engine frequently.

Good point, I actually rusted out my knock sensors cleanining the engine too much water, just use enough water to do the job, and I've found that wheel cleaner works best-some engine cleaners are so strong they can stain.
