Default Ticking underhood of 1998 LS1 T/A A4

There's no code. The car runs perfectly fine. It seems to be doing it only when the motor is during cold/cool operating temperatures. I was thinking the A.I.R. pump may be the culprit but I need confirmation of someone who's familiar with the symptoms and successful remedy.

seriously. with that info there is is most likely valve train noise. "sewing machine" i would like to say roughly 50% have it and there aren't any miracle cures but some to do's to check through.

This isn't likely the problem, but I'll throw it out there anyway. I had a ticking noise that sounded awful. Would get worse as the car warmed up. Investigated exhaust leak, lifters, etc. Shortly thereafter I experienced an 02sensor failure. I replaced both pre-cat sensors and the noise went away.

i have the same thing and am in the process of figuring it out. i have changed the oil and put in gc 0w30, checked for exhaust leaks, checked for vaccum leaks, arcing plug wire( so i just replaced all spark plugs and wires),i pulled the rocker arms off and checked for bent pushrods(i am in the middle of putting them back on right now), none were bent. so all of those things were good. so my next guess is lifter tapping. so those are all things you can check for. all are very easy. good luck man.

Ya'll may find that the ticking you hear under the hood is only the drivebelt tensioner. Mine has ticked from day one.

same thing w/ my car, I thought it was the valvetrain, but it's the belt tensioner.

Mine too, got a lil louder when I put the pully on, dunno why??? But nothing mechanically wrong, these cars just make lots of noise...

Most of us have a ticking noise from our LS1's. Some are lifters, some tensioners, some are injectors. I've just got to where I ignore it. My S10 Blazer has the 4.3 TBI and it is loud as all get out. As long as it keeps running well, I'll keep ignoring.

My 02 SS ticks when i first start it as it warms up it goes away.I'd say mine was a lifter but yours could be any thing everyone else mentioned also.

I have had 2 ticks lately: (1998 Formula....lid and catback only)

1st tick is under load around 5-6K RPM's.....I have concluded from my extensive research on here that my check valves that are apart of my EGR/AIR may be the culprit. It only happens when racing so once I get my LS6 intake and remove the EGR and AIR...I belive that it will go away.

2nd tick USED to happen after my spark plug change. Since the #8 is such a PITA to change, after my 1st plug change, a few of the plugs did not get overly tight so I had to tighten them up. The lack of room for #8 leaves little room or time to tighten the plug. The tick stopped. It sounds like something so stupid but trust me, check your plugs. They may have backed out from too much anti-seeze like mine also?

Good luck!

Correct. I re-wrote my email from "under warm..." to "cold/cool" during this noise event. I wrote it in a vague manner and meant "under warm..." as "less than warm..." conditions.

After reading the above and dipping to recollection, I think it may be a tensioner. The noise persists after when I believe the A.I.R. should shut off. I noticed in other cars that tensioner noises (when present) go away gradually...the A.I.R. pump when the motor warms up shuts off suddenly.

This ticking noise fades away gradually.

Thanks for all the responses!!!

my car would do that also but i think it was because i was being a cheap *** and putting the lower grade gas in when i was not going to go race. I started putting the good **** in and the noise stopped and i actually get better gas mileage now with the higher octane. But yeah almost every ls1 i have heard has some kind of noise

Most of the ticking when your car is cold is piston slap. A very common occurance on Gen III V8's. It's only considers a customer nuiccence and won't cause any problems.
