I'd never take a car to a dealer except for warranty work.

Honestly it doesn't really matter. Just tell the service advisor you will drive the car into the shop and stand there and watch while they do the service. If they say they can't let you drive it in or you can't be in the service area, turn around and walk out. You will find one eventually that isn't afraid to let you see what they are doing.

It's usually not that they don't want you to see what they are doing. Most if not all dealers and regular shops have insurance restrictions that don't allow customers or non-employees in the service areas. It's not worth the financial risk to them if you were injured.

However, I know where you are coming from. I feel more comfortable if I am allowed to monitor their progress on my car.

I agree. Dealerships are for buying. I never take the car back there. Find your own equivalent of the local 'hot rod' shop and make friends. Learn to do as much as you can on your own, then to the shop for things you can't. You can flush your own coolant system and save a bunch. A dealer or any shop is going to charge you a couple hundred bucks for what is basicly draining some fluid mixed with water and filling it back up again. Read up on here and do it yourself.

I just drain out the coolant in the radiator every other year and replace it. I know this is only half the coolant in the system but I feel doing this every other year will keep all the coolant clean and fresh. Very easy too.
