Default Cost to fix?

Hey guys. I just went to get my 98 Formula safety tested today, and it failed. The guy attempted to explain what it failed for, although it didn't seem like he had much of a clue.

From what I gather, it's the rack and pinion steering - as they said. It's apparently leaking on the drivers side...

Anyways, I'm not exactly sure what is wrong - perhaps someone knows on here, and also a rough estimate to fix it. The fellow told me $1200...which is hard to believe...

That seems kind of excessive for a steering rack change out. I had mine done 2 months ago for like 6 or 700. I would say the 600-800 dollar range is what you should expect. Call around to shops and have them price it out for you.

Thanks a lot. The guy wasn't able to explain what it was to me...so it's hard to know what is wrong.

Our safety inspections are stupid as hell. Chances are good you'd probably fail with a cage. Hell, you need windshield wipers, windshield washer fluid...but you don't need a windshield...WTF?!

If you know how to do your own wrenching, you should be able to pick up a remanufactured Rack and Pinion for under $300. The labor is what drives the price up.

Alright...what would be an estimate for labour.

The guy said 3ish hours.

I don't really want to do it myself, as it's below freezing...effing Canada

i think its like 75 bucks an hour in some places. but i think it varies a bit from state to state. but you are in canada, so dude i couldnt really tell you. call around and ask different shops how much they will charge labor wise to do the install.

I priced a rack & pinion but used my zip code in the states and they seem to go for around $300 here.

If I was at work I could actually look up labor times for this but im not so id guess 4-5hrs plus 1hr for the alignment. Id say $400-700 labor and $700-1000 total, maybe $1200 isnt too hard to believe?? Im just guesstimating though.

Ultimately id do it myself and save a few hundred bucks.
