Default I have a Rear Main Seal Leak....How hard is it to replace yourself??

Just curious as to how hard it is to replace the seal yourself. Only post if you've done this before please. I have a few questions.

1. Is there a "how to guide" somewhere?
2. How difficult is the job?
3. Any tips to make it easier to do?

Hopefully I can do this myself I have rebuilt a 10 bolt rear before and installed headers w/ catback.....thats all the experience i have really but want to learn more

Gotta drop the trans and remove clutch/flywheel. It's just a rubber seal.

I've never changed the seal but I looked right at it when I changed my car to an M6.
You basically have to take the transmission and flexplate/flywheel off. You can figure it out from there, it's just like changing any other (big) seal.

So if you find a trans removal write up that can be what you follow.

Check this out http://www.installuniversity.com/ins...sity/index.htm
Hit Install documents on the left, and scroll down to the transmission and hit the McLeod Clutch Install. That can take you as far as getting to the rear main cover, after that i hope someone can chime in with how to do the rest. Good Luck!

i have done it a few times. its really straight forward. its easy with a lift so if you have access to one use it. if not get the car up high on jackstands.
take out driveshaft, then transmission, take off clutch and flywheel. the rear main seal is the round seal around the crank where the flywheel bolts. i use a small flathead and carefully pop it out. then to put the new one in i pushed it in then carefully tapped it in with a rubber mallet. make sure it is pushed in evenly and not damaged.

Thanks for the info guys..... I feel alot better about trying to do this. I'm about 80% sure it's the rear main seal. It also kinda looks like its the oil pan gasket too though. Maybe I'll replace the oil pan gasket to see if that's whats causing it. I'll get some pics up when i get a chance.

I just had Chevy do mine, and the oil pan gasket........15 hours of labor, I would recommend doing it myself, the only reason I had them do it is mine is still under an extended warranty and it was only $100 bucks the 3 seals they replaced were $128............yeah it was 1100 for labor?

Is the oil leak supposed to stop immediately with a new rear main seal?

I recently had my rear main seal replaced, but I still noticed the same oil droplets where the trans meets the back of the engine.

It should as long as it is seated and seals up properly.

I'm told that there's a tool for stretching the seal so it fits over the crank. Is that tool necessary? Does anyone know where to get such a tool? Thanks.

usually when you buy the seal it'll have a plastic piece inserted in it, which stays on when you put it in the housing, as you push the housing on it slides the plastic out and slides the rear main onto the crank. Ive put in three rear mains, easiest method is to look on ebay and find the seller who is selling the housing, gasket, and the actual seal installed in the housing. Went that route with mine, dry as a bone now!
