i just pissed my car off...
ok so i had a manual fan switch wired up, and it's been working fine for a couple months. i decided to move the switch to a different spot, and hook up the ground wire so it'd light up at night. i moved the switch, grounded it to a screw on the radio panel on the inside (hooked alligator test clips to find a good ground), and tested the switch out while the car was off. everything worked. it lit up, fans kicked on, nothing bad.
so i decide to start the car up to make sure everything else worked good. i started it up, turned the switch on, fans kicked on, and when i turned the a/c on, the lights kinda dimmed, and within about 10 seconds, my hatch opened on it's own, the lights flickered, and it started to smoke from the instrument panel.
i quickly shut it off, and i guess something melted the internals of the switch and now it won't click when i turn it on. took all the wires off, taped them up so nothing would contact and make sparks, and tucked them away for now. turned the car back on (cautiously) and now my a/c isn't getting cold, when it's on high the fans don't kick on, and my trunk release button won't work, i have to use the keyless entry remote to open it.
any ideas on what i fucked up?

ok so i busted out the ole' multimeter, pulled a few (all) fuses, and came to determine this: not only did i blow the 25A fuse for the cig lighter/accy, but i also managed to blow the 40A Cooling Fan fuse, as well as melt the wire running from fan relay #1, which went through the fuse box under the kick panel to my switch. i had the "hot" wire for the switch coming from the accy fuse.
that wire melted to the trunk release wires, which is why it was shorting out. i pulled the relay wire out and it's all messed up. all of this because of where i grounded the switch. i had to take my ABS module fuse out to test the a/c, and it's up and operational now. looks like a trip to autozone is my plans for tomorrow.
i'm putting pics up as soon as i finish putting my panels back up.

i thought mine was a piece of metal, but i guess it was secretly a little demonic spot. should i retry grounding somewhere away from other wires or just go with an ungrounded un-lit switch?

+1, the switch for the fans should only be sending a ground to the fan relay wires under the hood. It sounds like you only had this problem after you hooked up the light, which does require a hot wire. Make sure you check the hot wire and any positive connections.

i had one wire coming from the relay #1, the light blue wire underneath, and the other wire was from an accy wire. the wiring diagram i used put the wire with the accy fuse, which is what i did and it worked perfectly fine for 2 months. so basically i had a 12v source going through the switch.

The switch I have in there is tiny, doubt it's rated at more than a couple amps if that. What wiring guide did you use? I did mine according to Shoebox.

do you have a picture of yours on hand? i looked at the wires on mine, and the C100 and C105 look different, which is why i asked. i'm good with electronics, but that diagram is confusing me.
