Default What tools do I need to... ?

Every time I need to fix something in my car I take it to a friend's garage that's loaded with all the tools imaginable but sometimes I don't wanna trouble him so I decided to start building up my own collection of tools. Now I could go out and drop $1000 and buy a ton of stuff (which is what I think he did once) but I don't have that kind of cash and so I'd rather build up my collection on a need basis.

So, my next need is to replace spark plug wires. The biggest obstacle I face (I believe) is removing the alternator.

So can someone who's done this before recommend what tools I need to get to make the job as painless as it can possibly be?

Thanks!

Gear wrenches are a must
so are sockets and eveything they imply (adaptors, swivels, extentions, etc)
Gear wrenches
beer (when tooling)
gear wrenches, and then probably some gear wrenches on the offset angle.

I have alot of cash in top name brand tools but if I had to do it all over I'd go with craftsman you can get sets for cheep and if they brake you can take them back to the store.
once you get your basic set of sockets sets of 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 standard and metric and your basic wrenches just buy tools as you need them. I also love gear wrenches couldent live with out them.

I'd buy a whole set like this. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...000P?adCell=A3
Cheaper than buying piece by piece. That, a set of gear wrenches, and a couple torque wrenches (3/8' and 1/2') should get you by.

yeah my buddy has that 245 piece craftsman set... and i have one that is like 167 piece... both do the job great... i also decided to pick up some gear wrenches... great add for sure
i know my tool set was on sale at sears when i got it, and i ended up getting it for like $130 or somethin like that, but its well worth it... makes up for itself in about one mechanical problem by being able to work on your car yourself
also, i have noticed since i bought this that tools just start accumulating... and one thing that would be nice to own for myself is a nice, sturdy jack and some jackstands

Lifting tools. Jacks, jackstands, ramps, creeper (or just be a man and use cardboard ).

Any as everyone has already said, wrenches and sockets of all types.

Tools for removing an LT1 alternator? A ratchet, the right sockets, I think the alternator is a 15mm, can't remember. It's very simple.

http://www.autozone.com/images/cds/g...3d801ce2de.gif

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.Remove the serpentine drive belt.

2. Disconnect the positive battery cable from the alternator "BAT" terminal.

3. Loosen the retaining bolt, then remove the wire from the "BAT" terminal (see arrow)

4. Detach the electrical connector from the alternator.

5. Remove the alternator rear brace bolt, the alternator upper and lower mounting bolts/screws and the nut from the alternator.

6. Remove the rear nut from the alternator rear inner brace, then remove the rear inner brace.

7. Remove the alternator from the accessory mounting bracket.
